Pupils from a local primary recently learned how to make apple juice using apples grown in the school’s orchard.
Year 6 pupils from Wylye Valley Primary School in Codford used the community-owned apple press to turn the school’s own apples into fresh juice.
The children first collected hundreds of apples from the orchard and then fed them into a macerator, which turned the fruit into pulp. The pulp was then pressed in Codford’s community-owned apple press, producing the juice.
“The children watched with absolute delight as the first trickle of apple juice ran into the awaiting bucket,” said Andy Pragnell, a teaching assistant at the school.
“The trickle soon became a steady flow of super-fresh, sweet-smelling apple juice, which the children gleefully drank. There was even enough juice for the whole school to enjoy at lunchtime.”
