Local team departs for Everest challenge

A team of 20 local residents has set off on a once-in-a-lifetime expedition to trek to Everest Base Camp.

The Westbury & Warminster to Everest 2 expedition will last just under three weeks and is being led by Major Rab Lundie, an army officer based in Warminster. The team includes people of different ages and physical abilities who have spent months preparing for the challenge.

The group will arrive in Kathmandu for kit checks and cultural experiences before heading into the mountains to climb to Everest Base Camp (5,364m/17,598ft) and Kala Pattar (5,555m/18,225ft).

“Training has been a real success,” said team member Kay, who has owned a business in Westbury for over 20 years. “We have met up regularly since last summer to have training walks together as a team.

“The most challenging part of the expedition will be the altitude. All the physical training we can manage up to now still won’t prepare us for what it feels to breathe and exert ourselves at 5000m where the available oxygen is only about 55% of that at sea level. Aerobic capacity will be severely reduced, and strenuous effort much more taxing. We have carefully factored in acclimatisation days where we still trek to gain height but sleep back down at the same altitude again and this will help us adapt.”

Warminster-based member Nick Tilt joined the challenge after seeing it advertised in the Warminster Journal last year. He said, “I remember back in about 1977, Chris Bonington came down to the Athenaeum in Warminster and gave a talk about his new book Everest, The Hard Way.

“I went along as a 16-year-old in 6th form, and I was just enthralled at the expedition that he headed up and organised. It’s a book my father bought me then, and I carried around the world with me. It’s always been there and then I suddenly realised I had the opportunity to walk to base camp, and it just ignited something that had remained dormant in me for almost 50 years.

“I’m most excited for to actually go to Nepal. It’s quite a unique part of the world and I don’t actually think I’ve been anywhere like that before in geographical terms. And obviously, as the expedition develops, getting your feet onto the foot of Everest, because it’s one of the few things when you’re a kid, that they always tell you it’s the largest mountain and the seed is sown in you how awe inspiring it must be. So, to actually get onto the mountain itself and experience that once-in-a-lifetime opportunity with a group of people that are all up for it will be amazing.”

The expedition follows Rab’s successful 2017 trek, when 22 of 29 participants reached Everest Base Camp and Kala Pattar.

While on the mountain, Rab plans to complete the Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon. From Kala Pattar he will return to Everest Base Camp for two days of further acclimatisation before taking part in the race, the highest marathon in the world.

The marathon takes place on 29th May, the anniversary of the first summit of Everest by Sherpa Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary in 1953. Only 20 UK participants and a total of 250 runners worldwide secure a place each year.

After the marathon, Rab will rejoin the team and lead the group back to Lukla to conclude the expedition.

The trip is self-funded, but the team is raising money for The Nestling Trust, a Wiltshire-based charity providing neonatal and maternal healthcare in remote areas of Nepal.

  • Gaming hub launches crowdfunding campaign to move to new venue

An inclusive gaming hub run by volunteers has launched a crowdfunding campaign to support a move to a more central location in Warminster.

FactoruM was established six years ago in Sutton Veny as a welcoming gaming community focused on tabletop games, board games and roleplay games. It is now aiming to raise £5,000 to cover a deposit and estimated moving costs to move to a new venue in Warminster town centre.

“Some expenses have already been generously covered by members of the community and the organisation’s directors, meaning this remaining amount will enable the move to go ahead,” said committee member Jess Smith.

“This move will not only help secure the long-term sustainability of the organisation but also allow it to expand its reach within the community and support even more local people.”

  • Identification board helps visitors spot wildlife at nature reserve mural

A wildlife-themed mural at Smallbrook Meadows Nature Reserve has been enhanced with a new identification board to help visitors recognise species found on site.

The artwork, painted on a shipping container in the nature reserve car park, was created by local artists Tanya Hinton and Nick Andrew and finished in July last year.

A newly installed board, designed by Nick Andrew, now features 40 animals and insects linked to the mural, including Canada goose, roe deer, coot and Adonis blue butterfly.

“Everything on the board is featured in the mural and everything in the mural can be found on Smallbrook Nature Reserve,” said Tanya Hinton.

  • Warminster RFC celebrate memorable campaign at annual awards night

Warminster Rugby Football Club brought the curtain down on a memorable 2025/26 campaign with their annual end-of-season presentation evening at their Folly Lane headquarters.

The celebratory night united players, committee members, and loyal supporters to reflect on a year of fierce competition, growth and transition for the Amber and Blues.

Club Chairman Robert Rowbotham opened the evening with a heartfelt thank you to the dedicated community that anchors the club. He offered special praise to the unsung heroes – the squad members whose names might not be on the trophies but whose relentless commitment drove the club’s success.

Following the Chairman, Club Captain Haydn Tryhorn took the floor to review the year’s achievements. Haydn highlighted significant development across the board, noting that Warminster RFC experienced major growth both on and off the pitch within the senior squads and across all club sections.

  • Appeal for volunteers at club for older people

Volunteers are needed to support Warminster’s Fitness and Friendship Club which offers older people a chance to make connections whilst enjoying gentle exercise.

The club runs fortnightly sessions every Tuesday from 2pm until 4pm at Warminster Civic Centre. The next session will take place on Tuesday 9th June.

The volunteer role is varied and can involve a range of activities such as setting up the room ready for the session, clearing the room after the session, welcoming club members, assisting members to participate in activities and conversation, accepting payments, making and serving refreshments or helping to promote the club in the local community. Volunteers must be aged 18 or over.

  • Young fundraiser inspired by dementia club friendship

An eight-year-old from Warminster has raised more than £500 for a local dementia charity after forming a friendship with a member at its Warminster centre.

Anna Sadowski raised funds for Beyond Dementia after being inspired by visits to the charity’s Old Silk Works day club with Princecroft Primary School.

Pupils regularly visit the club, which supports local people living with dementia through activities such as art therapy, cookery, board games, dance, poetry readings, photography and more.

“After a few visits Anna said she had made friends with a member there and had been dancing with her which she really enjoyed,” said Anna’s mum George. “She had lots of questions about dementia, and we discussed how it affects individuals and their families. Anna’s great-grandma was also affected by Alzheimer’s.

“A few weeks later Anna asked if she could volunteer at the club more often and outside of school. After contacting Beyond Dementia, Anna was told she was too young to volunteer but could do some fundraising if she wished.”

  • Local artist launches book on Wiltshire’s rivers

An artist based in Crockerton has released a new book of illustrations inspired by five local chalk rivers.

Nick Andrew’s book, Confluence, features drawings created on location at the Rivers Avon, Bourne, Ebble, Madder and Wylye.

“These five rivers define the geography of south Wiltshire, flowing towards, through and close to Salisbury,” he said.

“During the 18 months I spent on this project, I discovered and made drawings in some stunning and magical locations, often seemingly unchanged for generations.

“The experience and joy of working in each of these special places has helped me develop a greater understanding of them.”

  • Warminster landscape inspires new sculptures

Sculptures inspired by Warminster’s ecology, skies and landscape have been installed in the town by an acclaimed British artist.

Simon Periton was inspired by Warminster’s skies and surrounding landmarks, including Cley Hill and Arn Hill Down, to create two pieces titled Teumessian Fox and Laelaps.

“I watched the summer solstice sunset from the top of Cley Hill with the Strawberry full moon rising behind me,” said Simon. “Subsequently, I met with astronomer Steve Tonkin, Dark Skies Advisor to the International Dark Sky Reserve at Cranborne Chase. We explored the Jubilee Gardens site, taking coordinates using his alignment app and carrying out preliminary modelling to identify any significant celestial relationships.”
