Never-say-die Town strike late in dramatic 3–3 draw

Saturday 17th January

Bitton 3-3 Warminster Town

TheRed and Blacks made the trip to Britton to take on the promotion hopefulls. Manager Rob Nash made one change to last week’s starting line-up, Seb Hounsell came into the starting line up with Henry Mcferran missing out with an injury.

Town started well and looked to have settled well into the game. George Walker Haynes and Reece Collyer tried their luck from distance but neither caused the home keeper any alarms but Bitton then came into the game and soon put Town under pressure.

Bitton’s number nine was proving a handful causing the Town defence problems. A poor pass from Town led to the first goal; a dangerous pass was intercepted by the Bitton midfield who played into the striker, his initially effort was blocked but he made no mistake with the follow up. 1-0.

Town were at sixes and sevens, poor passing and not dealing with the conditions as well as the home side and it wasn’t long before Bitton doubled their lead. A pass down the right saw the winger cut into the box; his shot across goal was well saved by Sam Jepson but the ball fell to the onrushing forward who tapped into an empty net. 2-0.

Town needed to stay in the game as Bitton looked for a third. Town were forced into making two changes due to injury. Both Tyson Pollard and Max Whittaker picked up injuries and were replaced by Owen Bartley and Corey Gardner. Town seemed to settle and just before the break Jake Wright forced the home keeper into action forcing a fine save. HT 2-0.

Unfotunately Corey Gardner picked up a knock, and the substitute had to be replaced by Ben Harris. Town knew the next goal was vital and if they were to get back in the game they had to score it. They were given a let off a minute into the half; Bitton wasted a good opportunity to make it three with the shot blazed wide.

The game began to swing in Town’s favour as they started to dominate, Wright and Harris were causing the home defence problems and the Town midfield were in control. They eventually made the pressure pay when Jack Newman picked up a loose ball in the box, he slightly scuffed his shot but it was enough to find the back of the net.

Town were now in the hunt for a leveller and chances were coming; Wright had a shot well saved; Newman saw an effort go wide and Harris somehow missed the ball with goal at his mercy. But with time running out that man Newman was in the right place to pick up the ball in the box take it round the keeper and level things up.

But the drama didn’t stop there. As the game entered injury time, six minutes were to be played and virtually straight from the kick-off Bitton regained the lead with a well taken goal after Town failed to look after the ball. After working so hard to get back level it seemed that Town had given back the points to the home side but with two minutes to play they forced a corner. Collyer swung the ball in and Jordan Pinder was there to head home. 3-3!

The game restarted and this time there was no more time for any more drama. FT 3-3. A good second half from the lads.

  • Warminster Museum Column: Before the Bell was old

This is a most remarkable photograph. Not only is the Bell not yet the Old Bell, but the Lloyds Bank building has not yet been built.

The date stone on what was until recently, Lloyds Bank, gives the topping out date of 1873, so we can date this photograph sometime around 1871. In 1871, taking a photograph was not a matter of pointing a camera or a mobile phone at a subject and pressing a button. It really was a lot more difficult.

Mr. Smith, who took this photograph, had a studio and dark room in East Street. He probably set up his camera in a suitable position, ensured that a photograph would be suitably well focused, then left an assistant to stand guard over the camera while he went back to his dark room to prepare a glass plate. He prepared the light-sensitive chemical mix and spread this mixture over the surface of the glass plate. He now had about 15 or 20 minutes to take the photograph and to start to develop it. The glass plate with the light-sensitive materials would have been quite useless after about 25 minutes. Yes, this is a remarkable photograph.

  • New Warminster studio brings bungee fitness to town

A new fitness studio in Warminster is turning exercise on its head - quite literally.

Velocity Bungee Fitness, based at Norbeck Enterprise Centre, offers classes using suspended bungee rigs that allow participants to jump, glide and exercise with reduced impact on their joints.

“The idea came from a desire to bring something genuinely different to the local fitness scene,” said owner Stacey Holborow. “It’s fun, inclusive and accessible to people who might not feel at home in a traditional gym.”

Stacey opened the studio after trying bungee fitness herself.

“After experiencing bungee fitness firsthand and seeing how empowering it could be, I knew it was something worth bringing to Warminster and the surrounding areas,” she said.

  • Tribute to Warminster woman as two men jailed over fatal collision

The family of a ‘loving and creative’ Warminster woman killed in a road traffic collision three years ago have paid tribute after two men were jailed for dangerous driving.

Ella Cook died in a collision on the A36 in Claverton on 15th April 2023, aged 26.

Two men from Warminster, Lewis Glasby and Alfie Cook, were jailed after the court heard they had been racing one another before the collision.

Glasby, 23, of The Beeches in Warminster, and Cook, 22, of Brook Street in Warminster, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

On behalf of Ella’s family, Kai Poa-Tams, Ella’s fiancée, said, “Ella was a deeply loving partner, daughter, sister and friend. She gave herself completely to the people she cared about, always putting others first with a warmth that made everyone feel safe, valued and understood.

“She had a natural way of bringing people together, and her kindness left a lasting mark on everyone lucky enough to know her.

“Ella was also a valued and dedicated member of staff at NHS Blood and Transplant, progressing through her career with remarkable determination."

  • Women-only studio unveils low-impact fitness sessions

Spring is always a great time to try something new, and that’s exactly why Hebe-Fitness, a local female-only fitness studio, is launching a brand-new class this month.

Balance and Burn is designed specifically for women seeking a more mindful alternative to high-intensity workouts.

“It offers a fresh, holistic approach to exercise,” said Stacey St John Marchmont who is owner and head instructor at the studio in The Cornmarket in the centre of Warminster. “It focuses not just on physical strength, but also on stability, control and mental clarity, creating a well-rounded experience for both body and mind.

“Blending controlled precision, resilience-building exercises, core strengthening and mindful movement, the class delivers a dynamic yet accessible workout.

“At its heart are Pilates-based exercises that target the core - the foundation of all movement. Through controlled, low-impact techniques, participants can strengthen deep abdominal muscles, improve posture and develop long, lean muscle tone. The emphasis is firmly on precision rather than speed, helping to reduce the risk of injury while still achieving effective results."
