New CCTV cameras introduced at Warminster’s Westleigh Estate

New CCTV cameras introduced at Warminster’s Westleigh Estate

Concern about anti-social behaviour have led to the installation of CCTV cameras on Warminster’s Westleigh Estate.

The initiative was driven by community feedback gathered by Selwood Housing.

Back in July 2023, Westleigh Estate residents were surveyed and pointed to antisocial behaviour and dangerous driving as major concerns.

Cameras were initially installed in November 2024. However, shortly after the installation, two of the lampposts holding the cameras were deliberately cut down in an act of vandalism. As a precaution, the remaining cameras were temporarily removed.

CCTV has now been reintroduced and, in the weeks since the cameras have been up and running, residents have reported noticing a real difference.

One resident said, “It’s the best thing to have that many (cameras) on the estate because it was not uncommon for us to have 5 or 6 police cars coming here on a daily basis, but now we don’t get that many. It’s a lot safer and I know that my car’s safe and my property’s safe.”

Shaun Church, Senior Neighbourhood Manager at Selwood Housing

The cameras were introduced by Selwood Housing in partnership with Wiltshire Council, Warminster Area Board, Warminster Town Council and Wiltshire Police.

Stacie Allensby, Councillor for West Ward in Warminster, said, “I’m hoping it will make most of the residents feel a lot safer. If there are issues, then they know they’ve got CCTV footage to help them. Longer-term, I’m hoping that it’ll make residents feel safer and a lot more secure in their own homes.”

Cllr Stacie Allensby at the Westleigh Estate.

Inspector Louise Oakley and Sergeant Lyndsey Smith, from Warminster Neighbourhood Policing Team added, “We see having CCTV in any public area as a positive, it can act as a deterrent, help ID and catch criminals. Our town CCTV is an example of this, and any shopliftings or ASB incidents are picked up quickly.

“We fully support the instalment of the cameras on the Westleigh Estate and hope that the public can see how much this will be of a great benefit to the wider needs of the community.”

  • Historian seeks help in telling stories of Warminster’s war heroes

A historian is appealing for help from Warminster residents as he works on a new book that will tell the stories of local people who died during the Second World War.

Gary Cooper, who grew up in Warminster during the war, is compiling what he calls a “ground-breaking” book to record the names and profiles of the town’s war casualties, and to capture part of Warminster’s social history during that time.

“Aside from the War Memorial, there is no official book or collective register of those from Warminster who served and died in the Second World War,” said Gary. “To help preserve their memory, I’m appealing for any information, letters, postcards or photographs relating to those who served. Anything shared will be treated with care and returned after copying, and publication will only happen with your permission.”

  • Beatles tribute band make grand return to Warminster

Following last year’s triumphant sell-out show at the Athenaeum Centre, Beatles Complete are returning to the venue in 2025 for two nights of outstanding music from the most influential band of all time.

The tribute band – aged between 18 and 22 – will perform on Friday 13th and Saturday 14th June at 7.30pm.

Organisers say, “Having now performed over 200 shows at the world-famous Cavern Club, Beatles Complete are the youngest ever Beatles band to gain a residency at the Cavern Club in Liverpool, where they still perform.

“The band have received high praise for their musicianship, attention to detail and the raw energy of their live performances, and will be adding keyboards to the show at the Athenaeum Centre, allowing them to perform songs that aren’t possible in the Cavern.

“Classic songs such as Can’t Buy Me Love, Come Together and Hey Jude encourage the audience to become part of the show, with a whole host of other massive songs that can’t fail to get you on your feet, singing and dancing.”

Tickets cost £22, and are available at www.theath.co.uk or by calling 0333 666 3366.
  • Warminster’s bells ring out for new Archdeacon of Wilts

A Warminster church has hosted a special service to welcome the new Archdeacon of Wilts, marking the beginning of her role.

On Saturday 24th May, St Denys, also known as the Minster Church, welcomed clergy and community members for the licensing of the new Archdeacon of Wilts, Revd Louise Ellis.

The Bishop of Salisbury, Bishop Stephen, and the Bishop of Ramsbury, Bishop Andrew, were among those who took part in the service.

The Ven Louise Ellis was ordained in 2007 and has experience in parish ministry in Southwark and Salisbury diocese.

She has been working most recently to encourage more people into ministry in the Church of England, and as a priest in Lilliput, Dorset.

  • Appeal to reunite stolen items with owner

Stolen items with “huge sentimental value” have been recovered by police in Warminster.

They were found during a search of a property in the town following the arrest of a suspect in connection with a burglary.

A stopwatch, medals and military badges are among the items recovered.

Police also found a black photo album featuring a peacock and Mount Fuji design. Inside are sepia-toned pictures of a young man in military uniform, alongside images that appear to be from a beach holiday. A group photo of ‘Course No. 69 All Arms Drill Wing’ in Pirbright, Surrey, was also among the items discovered.
