Santa begins fundraising journey around Warminster

The Warminster Lions Christmas Float has started its fundraising journey around the local area.

The float, an annual tradition featuring Santa and a team of volunteers, will tour the town to raise funds for local charities until Friday 19th December.

“The annual tour here by Santa has long been a much-anticipated event in the lead-up to Christmas,” said Warminster Lion Nick Humpherson.

“It is just one of the many ways in which Warminster Lions Club serves its community, bringing excitement and good cheer to all ages as well as raising funds to support local good causes.”

The Lions will collect donations with buckets, a SumUp machine and a QR code at every stop.

“As the town has expanded over the years it has become increasingly difficult for this hard-working group of volunteers to reach out to every single household. Many residents have fond memories of the days when there would be a knock on the door and a Lion would be there with sweets and a collecting bucket!

“With just 12 evenings available to us this year, we are having to think carefully how best to bring the joy to as many people as possible. Our plan is to identify accessible and safe places to stop so that you can come to us at your closest stopping place. We are also hoping to arrange some daytime static events that you can visit.”

For more information, visit the Warminster Lions Club website or social media.

  • Police seize illegal e-bike in Warminster

Neighbourhood police officers in Warminster have been tackling ongoing issues with uninsured bikes, e-bikes and e-scooters in recent weeks.

An e-bike linked to anti-social behaviour in Warminster was seized on 28th May by officers from Response Team 4 after locating the rider and bike on Boreham Road.

The bike was seized for having no insurance and the rider was also reported at the scene for a number of road-related offences.

PC Kent said, “We have been aware of this particular bike for several weeks and the nature of the riding style which has been causing issues around Warminster. To remove this e-bike is a positive step.

  • Plans for 20mph speed limit in town centre

A 20MPH speed limit could be introduced on several town centre roads as a scheme aimed at improving safety and traffic flow moves forward.

The 20mph limit would cover a wide range of central streets, including Emwell Street, George Street, Silver Street and Market Place, alongside Coppice Close, Flers Court, George Street Place, High Street, Sambourne Gardens, Turnpike Court and sections of Sambourne Road, Vicarage Street and Weymouth Street.

It follows earlier discussions at town council level and a recommendation to the Local Highway and Footway Improvement Groups (LHFIG), which identified a number of locations as suitable for reduced speeds after assessment work and traffic monitoring.

The Wiltshire Council consultation is now open to residents and businesses, and runs until 13th July.

  • Warminster and Flers Twinning Association

The Warminster and Flers Twinning Association held a skittles evening at The Fox and Hounds on Deverill Road recently, and it proved to be another successful event.

A good turnout, including several new members, enjoyed many games either side of a hearty buffet which went down very well with all those who attended. At the end of the night Thelma prevailed at leading lady skittler and Derek as the top man. The final game was called Killer and saw Maxine as the last person standing.

The association is always happy to welcome new members to join our friendly group and information can be found on our Facebook group – Warminster & Flers Town Twinning or by emailing warminsterandflers@gmail.com

  • Schoolchildren celebrate love with church pilgrimage

Local pupils embarked on a whole school pilgrimage recently to celebrate their core value of love.

Pupils and staff from St John’s CofE Primary School joined members of the local church community on a walk to St. Aldhelm’s Church in Bishopstrow to reflect on what love means in the school community.

“Children shared stories of kindness and took part in activities exploring how love can be shown through friendship, courage, and compassion,” said assistant head Charlotte Walker. “This included role-plays of how to show love to others.”

The pilgrimage ended with songs of love and joy in the church, before the children walked back to school.

  • Fundraising quiz night for community green campaign

A quiz night will take place this month to raise money for a campaign to create a community green on Warminster High Street.

The event will take place at the Wellbeing Hub on Friday 26th June at 7.30pm.

The quiz is the first in a series of events throughout the year to raise funds towards the possible purchase of the site next to St Lawrence Chapel and turn it into a green space.

“The more money we raise as a community, the better it looks when we apply for a grant,” said Maggy Daniell from the Warminster Community Green Association.

  • Warminster Museum: Warminster Hospital

In the mid 1800s, towns began to improve local health care by providing cottage hospitals for those who could not afford to attend the few and distant hospitals.

Our first hospital was a converted farmhouse close to Portway. There is, sadly, no photograph of the original Cottage Hospital, but these photographs show its later development.

The money will support another year of provision delivered through an agreement with Warminster and Westbury Youth Club as part of ongoing youth services in Warminster.

Youth outreach workers join young people for two hours an evening for four evenings a week all year round, working with schools, Wiltshire Police, local shops and other agencies.

  • Western Counties title for young Warminster Boxer

Three boxers from the War Boxing Academy stepped through the ropes on Saturday 23rd May to represent Warminster, with the standout performance, a Western Counties under 60kg title win for Kiefer Darker, reports the club.

First up was Lexi Lee, who faced a stern test against a highly skilled opponent from Somerset. In what proved to be a fiercely competitive contest, Lexi showed tremendous resilience and composure under pressure. Weathering early storms, she grew into the bout and turned the tide with two standing counts, ultimately securing a well-earned unanimous decision victory. It was a performance that highlighted both her toughness and growing ring intelligence.

Next into the ring was Eric Garrett, who took on a hometown boxer in what was always going to be a challenging environment. Unfortunately, Er
