Small goes large for Warminster CC

Saturday 10th May saw all three Warminster Cricket Club teams play across the Wiltshire County Cricket Leagues.  The 1st XI continued their winning start to the season recording a 76-run victory over the Calne 1st XI.

Batting first, Warminster scored 271 for seven wickets off their 45 overs, with Jake Small scoring a superb, hard hitting 115 not out and Anre Schutte scoring 66.  Calne were dismissed for 195 runs with Rory Cullinan and Brad Small both taking four wickets.

Warminster 2nd XI lost their match against Swindon Titans.  Warminster never really came to terms with the wicket and were all out for 130 runs.  The Swindon Titans quickly scored the required runs, winning by 10 wickets.

The Warminster 3rd XI narrowly lost to Swindon Royal Challengers in a high scoring match.  Batting first, Swindon Royal Challenges scored 301 runs, with Mark Evans, Richard Ambler and Mark Ambler taking three wickets apiece. In response, whilst Stuart Waterland and Jayson Stokes both scored 50s and Tim Trombas top scored with 83, the 3rd XI fell just short of their total, scoring 291for four wickets off their 45 overs.

Last weekend saw the first ‘green sweep’ of the season with all three teams victorious.  The Warminster 3rd XI recorded a comfortable win against Allington 2nd XI, scoring 298 for five wickets and then reducing their opposition to 188 runs for nine wickets off their 45 overs.  Top scorer was Stuart Waterland with a run-a-ball 87 runs, whilst Jason Stokes and Tim Trombas continued their strong starts to the season, both scoring 50s in consecutive matches. Daniel Smith and Gethen Maskelyne returned the best bowling figures, both three wickets.

Sam Milner-Smith scored a 76-ball century for Warminster 2nd XI, helping the team to reach an imposing 266 runs for four wickets in their match against the Marlborough 2nd XI.  In response, the Warminster bowlers were excellent, with Max Ellis joining Sam on the honours board in taking five wickets for 26 runs.  Graham Cuthbertson was also exemplary behind the stumps, with the wicketkeeper taking four catches. Marlborough 2nd XI were finally bowled out for 115.

The 1st XI continued their unbeaten start to the season after a good win against Marlborough 1st XI.  Marlborough batted first, scoring 201 runs for four wickets off their 45 overs. In response, Warminster were always favourites to chase down the required runs and did so within 38 overs. Anre Schutte top scored with 70 runs, taking his run total after three matches to 243.  Warminster sit at the top of League 1, with their next match at home on Saturday 24th May, 1pm start.  You can follow Warminster Cricket Club on Instagram and Facebook.

  • Warminster Town’s U18s win league at first attempt

Warminster Town’s Under-18s have been crowned league champions in their debut season, sealing the title in impressive fashion with a game to spare.

The newly formed side have gone unbeaten across 11 matches, scoring 54 goals and conceding just 11.

“We’re absolutely delighted to see our Under-18s crowned league champions in their very first season,” said manager Manager Rob Nash. “It’s a fantastic achievement and one that everyone connected with Warminster Town Football Club is incredibly proud of.

“From the very beginning, this group of players has shown real commitment, togetherness, and a desire to improve week in, week out. The way they’ve approached the season both in training and on matchdays has been outstanding, and they’ve fully deserved their success. It’s fantastic to bring silverware to the club in the very first season of the U18s setup.

  • Athenaeum Singers to perform Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius at Bath Abbey

Warminster-based Athenaeum Singers are preparing to take part in a major choral performance at Bath Abbey this week.

Leading the Athenaeum Singers will be their acclaimed Music Director and Conductor Thomas Mottershead. “This will be a very exciting opportunity for two of Wiltshire’s leading choral societies to join forces – something that rarely happens,” he said.

“We are also thrilled to be collaborating with one of the South West’s foremost professional orchestras, Bath Philharmonia, in the magnificent setting of Bath Abbey to provide a truly memorable experience for performance and audience alike. Thanks to the sponsorship of Anglian Home Improvements, we can perform this momentous piece at the scale it truly deserves.”

  • Marathon runner raises funds for Warminster charity in honour of mum

A man has raised more than £2,000 running the London Marathon for a Warminster charity which has supported his mum since her multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosis.

Hugo Campbell-Smith raised over £2,000 for the Warminster-based Wessex MS Therapy Centre, which his mum Sophie is a member of.

“At the start of last year my mother was diagnosed with MS,” said Hugo. “Whilst this was shocking news and there was a lot of uncertainty, she has remained impressively positive in the face of a very scary diagnosis thanks to the support of two amazing charities – the Wessex MS Centre in Warminster and Overcoming MS.”

MS is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the brain and spinal cord. There is currently no cure. The centre provides a range of physical, emotional and social therapies to help manage symptoms, promote independence and enhance overall wellbeing.

  • Athenaeum expands offerings across 2026

The Warminster Athenaeum is expanding its number and variety of shows this year to keep local people entertained.

The venue’s calendar is packed with 70 per cent more events this year compared to 2025, including live comedy, musicals, music concerts, National Theatre Live, films and community events.

“For families and children already this year, the Athenaeum has hosted successful shows such as Circus Extravaganza and Unicorn Live, tailored especially for children,” said Trustee Phil Keeble. “More family-friendly performances are planned for later in the year including of course the ever-popular pantomime presented by Oddity Theatre, ensuring continued appeal to younger audiences.”

Sell-out concerts have already featured All Floyd, with upcoming acts including California Dreaming in May and Word Up 80’s Full Live Band in June.

“New this year we now screen performances from National Theatre Live. Musical theatre and comedy continue at the core of our programme. Our Warminster Comedy Club now attracts sell out audiences,” Phil added.

  • Water pollution awareness initiative comes to Warminster

Yellow fish markers have been installed at drains across Warminster to raise awareness of water pollution and where street drains lead to.

The Yellow Fish scheme which has the slogan ‘only rain down the drain’ is used to encourage people to protect their local environment and prevent pollution as anything entering a drain marked with a yellow fish may go direct to the nearest stream or river causing pollution and impacting wildlife.

A total of 30 drains across Warminster have this drain marker, with the project funded by Wessex Water.

A Warminster Town Council spokesperson said, “By marking surface water and storm drains with a yellow fish symbol, the town council is highlighting that anything poured into these drains flows straight into natural watercourses, whether that’s a stream, river, lake, canal, or coastal bathing waters, so any pollutants can quickly harm or destroy wildlife.”
