Sustainable Warminster Column: Why Warminster’s lake closure matters more than you think

Warminster’s town park lake closed in early July after the discovery of blue‑green algae.

Blue‑green algae might sound like a minor inconvenience, but it’s a warning sign. These blooms live well in warm, stagnant water. Even touching contaminated water can cause rashes or illness in people; it is toxic to pets – and the algae can kill aquatic life by depriving bodies of water of oxygen.

As summers become hotter and more unpredictable, blooms like this could become more common across the UK. The closure highlights the ill-health of the lake’s ecosystem. Without enough oxygenation or aquatic plants, the water becomes more vulnerable to algae growth, and a lack of natural filtration contributes to the problem.

Sustainable Warminster has long championed nature‑friendly management across the town. The lake’s current situation shows why that work matters. Restoring plant life, improving water movement and reducing pollution aren’t just environmental ideals – they’re practical steps that keep community water spaces safe and enjoyable. If we don’t act now, closures like this could become a regular part of summer.

The council is working with the Environment Agency and will reopen the lake as soon as conditions improve.
