It’s been a busy start to the year at the Athenaeum, with a packed schedule of shows and investment in some much-needed upgrades.
Funding from the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL), managed by Warminster Town Council, has meant that £30,000 will go towards vital improvements for the venue. Stage equipment will be replaced, a new lighting desk will be installed, and a set of radio microphones has been ordered. The new set-up will include a standalone radio licence to cut out all interference inside the Grade II-listed building.
April is set to be full of exciting events at the venue. Two shows aimed at a younger audience, Princess Live and visiting pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk, will take place, as well as a stand-up comedy night, a Legends of Motown evening, and a ‘Night at the Musicals’ fundraiser for the mental health charity Mind for older audiences.
Chair of Trustees for the Athenaeum, Jon Ellis, said residents can keep up to date on events and improvements – such as from the building’s Gallery space which will operate under the branding ‘Arts@theAth’– within the pages of the Warminster Journal.
He said, “From one historical town institution to another, it’s great to see the Warminster Journal taking new steps in a refreshed format, and we look forward to sharing Athenaeum news with local residents.”
The Warminster Athenaeum is held in trust on behalf of the residents of Warminster by a charitable trust. It is one of the oldest non-cinema venues in the country still showing films – the first having been presented in 1897. Entering the current trust’s 25th year, the charitable scope covers entertainment, education, and community support for local residents and visitors to the town.
