A charity auction has raised £1,400 for the Athenaeum Singers.
Held at the Warminster Civic Centre on 26th April, items donated included dog supplies, hair care products and artwork.
Liz Light, of the Athenaeum Singers, opened the event by explaining how much the choir loved singing and wanted to do much more of it in the community. A project is currently underway to start a men’s choir, with all money raised by the auction going towards this project.
Roger Day, the auctioneer and one-time drama adviser in Wiltshire, started the auction with a story about his first visit to Warminster, which involved an encounter with young farmers armed with pitchforks outside the Athenaeum.
Liz Light said, “This took place a long time ago, we hasten to add, but the laughter and fun became the theme of the evening. Roger led the auction with a perfect blend of playfulness and professionalism, with calls being taken, in jest, from Dubai and Greenland.
“Local businesses have been extremely generous. Restaurant vouchers, music vouchers, tea for two in Codford, flowers, jewellery, a new vacuum cleaner and many more items were eagerly snapped up, with some intense outbidding going on. Plus we all know now what a Tensegrity table is – and a lovely thing it is too.
“In the silent auction, people crowded round and watched carefully so that they could get the final bid in for plants, cushions, dog care items, hair products among many other things. There are some pretty determined people around.
“A heartfelt thanks to all the contributors, and the choir hopes that the local businesses will reap benefit from their involvement.”
