Town park lake remains closed after algae discovery

Warminster’s town park lake remains closed after the discovery of potentially harmful blue-green algae in the water at the start of the month.

Warminster Town Council closed the Lake Pleasure Grounds lake on Friday 3rd July to the public following the discovery of a cyanobacteria bloom, meaning boats are currently unavailable to hire and the model boat club cannot meet at the park.

Blue-green algae can produce toxins which may cause health issues if touched or swallowed, with some types being highly poisonous and potentially fatal to pets.

The council is working with the Environment Agency and will re-open the lake as soon as it is safe to do so.

Facilities at the park including the Pavilion Parlour, skate park, splash pad, play areas, putting green and tennis courts will all remain open throughout the lake closure.

Estate manager Kevin Whitehorn said, “Unfortunately, the town council has closed the lake in the park due to the discovery of a blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) bloom.

“This means that the boats will not be available to hire and the model boat club will not be meeting at the park. Blue-green algae can be toxic and the advice from the Environment Agency is to keep people and pets away from the water.”
