Town’s first away win for 22 months!

Warminster manager Rob Nash made two changes from the team that started the midweek draw against Devizes.

Henry McFerran replaced injured captain Owen Bartley. Henry took over at centre back allowing Ryan Benson to move into midfield. The other change saw Corey Gardner replace Reece Collyer in midfield.

Warminster started well dominating possession in the first quarter of an hour, but as the half wore on Broadwalk started to get into the game. Both sides struggled to control the ball on an uneven surface and with a gusting wind. The best chance of the half came on 40 minutes when Jack Newman was sent clear. He cut into the penalty area and shot but Broadwalk keeper Ben Britton saved well with his legs. At the break we still awaited the first goal of the afternoon.

Warminster started the second half as they had the first, in the ascendancy. On 49 minutes Jack Newman fired just wide of the post from the edge of the box. Then in the 57th minute Jordan Pinder’s header from a left-side corner flew just over the bar.

The pressure was building and on the hour Warminster took the lead. A Broadwalk handball in the box led to the visitors being awarded their fourth penalty in three games! Spot kick expert Jordan Pinder stepped up and once gained made no mistake, 1-0 Warminster.

Warminster taking the lead seemed to stir Broadwalk into action and five minutes later their centre forward Joshua Gilborson’s shot from outside the bar flew just wide of Jack Amor’s right-hand post. Then on 74 minutes Tyson Pollard was sent clear down the left, cut inside the right back and curled a shot just wide of the far post. A minute later that miss appeared to have been costly when Broadwalk equalised. They broke quickly and Gilborson found himself in space in the box and beat Jack Amor low to his left, one-all.

Three minutes later the hosts went so close to taking the lead when a free-kick from outside the box was lifted over the wall but just cleared the crossbar. With time running out the hosts were looking dangerous. Then on 84 minutes a Warminster break down the left led to a cross into the box. Broadwalk only half cleared the ball, and it bounced invitingly in front of substitute Reece Collyer fully 30 yards from goal. He let fly one of his signature rocket shots that flew into the Broadwalk keeper’s top left-hand corner, 2-1 Warminster.

Three minutes later it was almost all square again. A Broadwalk free kick from the left into the danger area was headed goalwards and only a superb diving save by Jack Amor kept the visitors ahead.

Stoppage time was tense viewing but the referee finally blew the full-time whistle. Warminster had won their first Western League away game since October 2023. It’s been a long time coming!

  • Christmas memorial service returns

A Christmas memorial service will take place at St Lawrence Chapel this month, offering residents the chance to remember a loved one.

The service will be held on Saturday 6th December at 11am, with refreshments served afterwards.

The annual event is run by F Curtis & Son Funeral Directors and provides a time to reflect for those who are bereaved.

“It’s a chance for us all to come together and reflect over the past year, light a candle for a lost loved one and then enjoy a mince pie and a glass of mulled wine or a cup of tea,” said Lindsey Elvin, funeral arranger at F Curtis & Son.

  • Church sends Christmas parcels to families abroad

Over 100 Christmas parcels have been sent out to families in South East Europe by volunteers from Warminster United Church.

The church collects items throughout the year to fill shoeboxes in time for Christmas.

This year, 123 shoeboxes were sent out, full of items such as toiletries, clothes, toys, stationery, makeup, household tools, hair accessories and sweets. A total of 113 boxes were sent to House of Opportunity in Salisbury to be distributed to families in South East Europe, and 10 boxes were taken to a local women’s refuge.

“A big thank you to all, from the church and the local community, who contributed in any way,” said Joan, one of the organisers of the shoebox appeal at the church.

“We hope to do the same next year. We will start collecting things to go in the boxes after Easter.”

  • Residents rally against Warminster housing plans

Residents in Warminster are campaigning against plans to build 135 homes on land at the town’s eastern edge.

Bellway Homes is preparing a planning application for land at Home Farm, including 40% affordable housing, with over half of the 5.9-hectare site retained as publicly accessible open space. Proposals were unveiled at a recent public consultation at the Civic Centre.

Residents say the site is unsuitable for development due to the lack of suitable access, the loss of an important rural buffer for Warminster, and the risk of harm to several significant heritage assets and Bishopstrow Hotel, one of the town’s largest employers.

Campaigners say the site has already been judged inappropriate for housing. In 2020, a government-appointed planning inspector’s report for Wiltshire Council concluded that “serious doubts remain over whether a form of development would be possible that would not have an unacceptable degree of impact on the character, appearance or significance of heritage assets.”

  • Local grandad to drive medical aid to Ukraine

A local grandfather is to drive an ambulance full of medical supplies to war-torn Ukraine.

Stephen Ryder, a presenter on Warminster Community Radio, and his co-driver Winkie Fry will be part of a convoy of six ambulances each packed with six tonnes of medical aid being driven to Ukraine in January.

Mighty Convoy is a volunteer-run UK charity that delivers second-hand ambulances with medical supplies to Ukraine, and Stephen is fundraising to help fund the purchase of an ambulance and supplies.

Launched in 2022, Mighty Convoy has already led 18 trips to Ukraine, raised over £500,000, and donated 78 ambulances and 4×4 pick-ups, which are used to transport wounded soldiers away from the front line.

“Since the invasion of Ukraine, I’ve been looking for ways in which I can help,” said Stephen. “We need to do everything we can to stop Vladimir Putin and to help the people of Ukraine.

  • Kingdown students shine in school production

Students at Kingdown School have been praised for their production of Legally Blonde Jr, described as one of the best performances in the school’s history.

The production, which ran over three nights in October, was based on the 2001 film Legally Blonde.

“We are so proud of every single member of the cast and crew,” said Mr Nat Selman and Miss Emily Gordon, co-directors of the show. “Their hard work, creativity, and commitment paid off in spectacular fashion, resulting in a performance that will be remembered for years to come.”

“The cast shone throughout, with Scarlet Shepherd delivering a particularly stunning performance as Elle Woods, capturing both the humour and heart of the role. Freddie Evans gave a strong and commanding portrayal of Emmett Forrest, while Daisy Cole delighted audiences as Paulette, stealing every scene she appeared in. Together, the ensemble created a polished and heartfelt performance.”
