Warminster man sleeps out to raise funds for homeless veterans

A Warminster man has swapped his warm bed for a cold sleeping bag to raise vital funds and awareness for veterans experiencing homelessness.

Steve ‘Chalky’ White took part in The Great Tommy Sleep Out to support the Royal British Legion Industries (RBLI), a charity helping veterans in need.

For many veterans, transitioning from military service to civilian life can be challenging, especially if it’s sudden due to injury or medical discharge. The loss of the structure and camaraderie of military life can have a severe impact on their mental health. Steve, who works as a caterer at the Battlesbury Barracks, slept outside Warminster Town Football Club to raise awareness for homeless ex-servicemen and women.

He said, “Through my work, I have a lot of friends in Warminster with links to the armed forces. Some of the stories they tell about what they’ve seen, I can’t even begin to imagine what they’ve been through.

“Some of them are just 17 or 18-years-old and prepared to go to war and fight for us. It’s completely unacceptable how little support they have when they come back home. It’s wrong on so many levels.

“We should be doing everything we can to protect our veterans. The work RBLI does is so needed and I’m so glad they exist and run events like The Great Tommy Sleep Out.”

Steve put up flags which said ‘Lest We Forget’ and ‘Great Tommy Sleep Out’ by his sleeping bag during his challenge.

When the cold began to take its toll, Steve got a much-needed morale boost from wife Kelly, ten-year-old daughter Thea and their Romanian rescue dog Gru. The trio had made a surprise visit to deliver a pint of Guinness and a packet of sweets to the fundraiser.

When the morning came, he was delighted to return home – but also aware of how lucky he was to be able to do so.

“It was absolutely freezing during the challenge,” Steve, whose father served in the army, said. “But I always knew I was able to go home, have a warm shower and get into a nice warm bed when it was all over. I had the luxury of being able to do that, but so many veterans don’t have that chance. They are homeless day in, day out, week in, week out.”

According to government data, there were 2,110 homeless families with an armed forces veteran in England in 2022-23, a 14% increase from the previous year.

Steve is aiming to raise £1,000 for RBLI, which provides housing and employment support for veterans, particularly those with health conditions or disabilities. He has currently raised £735.

This year marks Steve’s second participation in The Great Tommy Sleep Out, a challenge he was first encouraged to take on in 2024 after a night out at the Fox and Hounds pub in Warminster.

In addition to working at Battlesbury Barracks, Steve is a well-known entertainer in the area, performing with The Covertronics and The Doghouse Duo. At recent performances, he set up a donation bucket for The Great Tommy Sleep Out fundraiser.

Steve has vowed to do the fundraiser again in 2026 and has thanked everyone in the town for their support as well as Warminster Town Football Club.

He added, “It’s not only about raising money, it’s about raising awareness of what is going on. When I first did The Great Tommy Sleep Out last year, I just kept thinking, ‘Why aren’t we looking after these people more?’”

“I hope I can play a small part in making a difference. The response has been phenomenal, and I feel very lucky that so many people have donated. I really hope I can reach £1,000 this year.”

  • Warminster to host free day celebrating local wildlife

A free nature event organised by the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust will come to Warminster this month.

Country Comes to Town will take place at the Lake Pleasure Grounds and Smallbrook Meadows Nature Reserve on Saturday 16th May. From 10am to 4pm, visitors can enjoy a wide range of activities celebrating local wildlife and the trust’s conservation work across the county.

Activities will include guided tours of Smallbrook Meadows, children’s crafts, hook-a-duck, a smoothie bike and the chance to meet local wildlife experts, including the trust’s award-winning water team, Warminster Toad Patrol and Sustainable Warminster.

“We are thrilled to bring the magic of the countryside into the heart of Warminster this year,” said Becki McKinlay, director of engagement and fundraising.

“This event is such a great opportunity for us as Wiltshire’s local Wildlife Trust to connect with our community and show people the incredible nature that can be found right on our doorstep."

  • New walking group brings young women together

A new social walking group for younger women has been set up by two Warminster friends.

A total of 24 local women attended the first Third Space Girls walk in Longleat Forest.

Friends Katie and Ellie created Third Space Girls, a social walking community for women aged 18 to 30 to bring like-minded people together outdoors and help them meet new people.

“It was such a success, and it was wonderful to see so many people interested in the walk,” said Katie. “Everyone was so lovely and there was a great community atmosphere. We had to split the walk into two groups, morning and afternoon, because there were so many people.

“We were very lucky with the weather; we probably came over prepared expecting lots of rain, but it was really beautiful. We did an 8km loop with a coffee and pupuccino break, then stopped at the The Bath Arms afterwards for a drink and a snack. It couldn’t have gone much better for the first event and we’re getting straight on with planning the next couple of events.”

  • Slimming World Warminster brings all sessions under one roof

A weight management group in Warminster has brought all of its local sessions together at a single venue as it continues to promote a long-term approach to healthy living.

Slimming World Warminster is now based at Warminster Baptist Church in North Row, where four weekly sessions are held.

Local consultant Gary Timperley says Slimming World programme is built around sustainable lifestyle change rather than short-term dieting, working towards gradual weight loss.

“Slimming World is not about restriction or deprivation; instead, it promotes a healthy, balanced way of eating through our well-known Food Optimising plan,” said Gary. “Members learn how to enjoy everyday foods while still achieving their weight loss goals, removing the guilt and confusion that often comes with dieting.

“This approach is not only effective but also sustainable – something many people struggle to find elsewhere."

  • Residents take next step in bid for town centre green space

A new group has been officially launched to campaign for a community green space at a High Street site next to St Lawrence Chapel.

The Chapel Green Association was formally launched by residents at a recent meeting at the Wellbeing Hub.

Plans to redevelop the site at 3 High Street into a new shop and ten flats were submitted to Wiltshire Council in 2024. After the previous building was demolished, some residents called for the site to be retained as an open green space to “enhance” the view of the adjacent chapel.

The new group is campaigning for the land to be kept as a community green.

“We had a good turnout,” said project campaigner Maggy Daniell. “We ended up where we wanted to be – Chapel Green Association is now set up. It has the twin aims of preserving the current enhanced view of the chapel by buying the demolition site next to it, and of converting it to a community green. This would be transformative for the town centre, giving it a much-needed green heart."

  • Warminster Town’s U18s win league at first attempt

Warminster Town’s Under-18s have been crowned league champions in their debut season, sealing the title in impressive fashion with a game to spare.

The newly formed side have gone unbeaten across 11 matches, scoring 54 goals and conceding just 11.

“We’re absolutely delighted to see our Under-18s crowned league champions in their very first season,” said manager Manager Rob Nash. “It’s a fantastic achievement and one that everyone connected with Warminster Town Football Club is incredibly proud of.

“From the very beginning, this group of players has shown real commitment, togetherness, and a desire to improve week in, week out. The way they’ve approached the season both in training and on matchdays has been outstanding, and they’ve fully deserved their success. It’s fantastic to bring silverware to the club in the very first season of the U18s setup.

  • Marathon runner raises funds for Warminster charity in honour of mum

A man has raised more than £2,000 running the London Marathon for a Warminster charity which has supported his mum since her multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosis.

Hugo Campbell-Smith raised over £2,000 for the Warminster-based Wessex MS Therapy Centre, which his mum Sophie is a member of.

“At the start of last year my mother was diagnosed with MS,” said Hugo. “Whilst this was shocking news and there was a lot of uncertainty, she has remained impressively positive in the face of a very scary diagnosis thanks to the support of two amazing charities – the Wessex MS Centre in Warminster and Overcoming MS.”

MS is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the brain and spinal cord. There is currently no cure. The centre provides a range of physical, emotional and social therapies to help manage symptoms, promote independence and enhance overall wellbeing.
