Warminster man welcomes gate installation after safety concerns

A Warminster man has welcomed the installation of a gate after raising concerns about the lack of a barrier between a footpath and the A36.

David Flint contacted Wiltshire Council after noticing that a stile separating the footpath from the busy road near the Jubilee Gardens housing development had been removed. He feared that if children or animals went through the gap, they could stray into the path of traffic.

Describing the A36 as “a very busy, dangerous road”, David asked the council to install a gate to create a barrier.

“I was corresponding with various people at Wiltshire Council and I had virtually given up, to be honest,” he said.

“I was going a bit over the top, like, for example, ‘If you can have it on your conscience that some small child or an animal, a dog, can be run over and killed, then fair enough, but I’ve told you what the situation is.’

“Eventually, the boss of that department came back to me and said, ‘Actually, you’re right. We do need to put something there’, and that’s what they did.”

David hopes the outcome will encourage other residents to report problems when they spot them.

He said, “My advice is to go ahead and get it done. Contact the council and actually get the ball rolling!”
