Warminster Sports Centre manager’s fundraiser after son’s premature birth

The manager of Warminster Sports Centre will be taking on an inspirational charity challenge this summer to raise money for the hospital ward which saved his son’s life.

Hunter Hill was born premature on 6th August 2022 at 27 weeks and four days. He weighed just 2lbs 2oz and needed 12 minutes of CPR and was moved to RUH Bath’s Neonatal Unit (NICU) after a period on ventilation.

Hunter was too weak to be held, which meant all dad Harry Bodymore could do was reach out and gently hold his son’s small finger.

Hunter’s mum Amber Hill, who had an emergency C-section, meanwhile faced her own recovery from the birth ordeal.

Amber said, “When I was unconscious, Harry wasn’t allowed in the room and a midwife said ‘there is a chance neither of them will survive.’ Harry met Hunter for the first time when he was on ventilation. He was translucent and so tiny, about the size of two hands put together.”

After 69 days in NICU, Hunter was allowed home with his parents where he is now thriving.

Dad Harry, 26, has now decided to give back to the hospital ward’s staff with a huge charity challenge. On 5th July, he will swim in the ‘Pier-to-Pier’ challenge from Boscombe to Bournemouth as Amber, 24, and Hunter, now 2, watch on. One of Europe’s biggest open water swimming events, the route stretches 1.4 miles across the Channel.

Harry has been able to train at the pool and gym at his workplace, the Warminster Sports Centre, where he is the manager.

“In the last year I’ve really got into my swimming,” Harry said.

“I was looking to fundraise for the NICU and when I found this event I thought it was perfect. I probably swim three times a week and go to the gym around two or three times a week. To try and get myself ready for the cold I’ve gone to the Dundas Aqueduct on the way to Bath and I’m going to start training at the Vobster quarry from next month. I’ve done a couple of ice baths as well. I’m usually pretty good with the cold, so fingers crossed it won’t be too much of a shock.”

Once the money is raised – Harry’s target is £2,000 – it will go towards items the NICU is desperately in need of. Amber has reached out to the hospital staff directly who revealed they would love an additional baby apnoea monitor, a new breast pump and ear plugs for sleeping mums.

For Harry and Amber, the pier-to-pier fundraiser is just a small way to say thank you to the ‘fantastic’ ward who went above and beyond for their son. The couple feel huge gratitude to their ‘second family’ at NICU and visit each Christmas with freshly baked cakes and at Easter with chocolate eggs for staff.

Amber added, “Without the love and care from these amazing nurses alongside their amazing equipment, Hunter would not be here today.

“We’ve got such a good bond with them and it’s nice for them to know how Hunter is getting on. It’s also really special for him to know where he started off and all the people who helped him along the way.”

As well as friends and family, local businesses have also come out to support Harry’s fundraiser.

  • Family host charity event in memory of father

The family of a local man who died in 2021 following a short illness with brain cancer have organised a charity coffee morning in his memory.

Nick McHale died in May 2021 just seven months after being diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer. He is being remembered with a charity event on Saturday 18th October, from 10am to 12pm at the Lakeside Centre in the Lake Pleasure Grounds.

“Nick was an incredible husband and father, and to have him taken away so soon has been incredibly hard for us all,” said Rachel McHale, whose daughters were aged just 8 and 10 when Nick died. “I am, however, finding that helping to give back to those earlier in their bereavement journey helps incredibly.”

  • Community holds ‘duck walk’ in memory of local man

Warminster residents recently came together for a sponsored ‘duck walk’ in memory of a local man who took his own life earlier this year.

The event was organised in memory of Teilo How, a 22-year-old theatre technician at the Athenaeum who died in January, and has raised nearly £1,000.

Before his death, Teilo left farewell messages for friends on rubber ducks at the Athenaeum, asking that they be placed where they could watch the stage in his memory. This inspired the idea for the sponsored ‘duck walk’, raising awareness and funds for the men’s mental health charity Men’s Minds Matter.

“Although it was in memory of Teilo, it was a happy event. It was lovely,” said Penelope Christopher, who has known Teilo since he was 12 and organised the walk with his family.

  • Councillor leads calls for breast screening unit to be reinstated in Warminster

A local councillor is campaigning for a breast screening service to be reinstated in Warminster.

A mobile screening unit was previously based in Morrisons car park, but the service was recently withdrawn from the town. Residents now have to travel to nearby towns such as Westbury and Amesbury for their appointments, which are offered to women aged 50 to 70 for routine breast cancer screening.

Cllr Liz Lee has raised concerns that limited access to services may cause women in Warminster to miss vital appointments and therefore diagnoses. An estimated 2,500 to 3,000 women in the Warminster area qualify for the screening.

The Wiltshire Breast Screening Service said the unit was removed due to antisocial behaviour, including people banging on the side of the van during treatment sessions.

Cllr Lee said, “I am particularly concerned that the change will reduce screening uptake, especially among women with limited mobility or without easy transport. We know delays in diagnosis may lead to cancers being found at later stages, leading to increased costs for the NHS and worse outcomes for patients.”

  • Warminster firefighters rescue pregnant horse from garden hole

A pregnant horse was rescued by Warminster firefighters after becoming trapped in a large hole in a garden.

Firefighters from Warminster’s Fire Station were called to a property in Dilton Marsh on the morning of Saturday 27th September, assisted by a specialist rescue team from Poole, following reports of a ‘large animal rescue.’ The horse had become stuck in a hole that had been dug in the garden as part of an ongoing home extension project.

Four horses had entered the garden through a broken fence, but one pregnant horse became trapped in the deep soakaway hole. Firefighters worked carefully to free the animal, using an on-site mechanical digger to widen the area and allow the horse to be lifted to safety.

  • Local veteran takes on Triple Challenge for mental health charity

A local army veteran has successfully completed a gruelling ‘Triple Challenge’ on Snowdon raising more than £1,700 for the mental health charity Rethink Mental Illness.

Capt. (Retd) Tom O’Brien, Chairman of the Warminster Branch of the Royal Irish Rangers, joined ten other participants from across the country for the challenge which saw them cycle 15 miles, hike up and down Snowdon, and then canoe the length of Lake Llyn Padarn.

Tom raised a total of £1,703, which will go directly towards supporting those struggling with severe mental illness.

“I wanted to raise the awareness of mental health issues, so by doing the challenge and all the build-up work, I had plenty of discussions with lots of different people,” said Tom.

“Our new bushcraft workshop aims to give unpaid carers a unique chance to take time for themselves in the great outdoors,” said Martina Gibson, Head of Services and Volunteering at Carer Support Wiltshire, the charity organising the event.

“With many carers seeking the benefits of nature for their wellbeing, the workshop offers a refreshing alternative that allows carers to relax, connect, and recharge while learning new skills together.”
