An 18-year-old from Warminster is running 5km every day for 100 days to raise money and awareness for the Samaritans, after the charity supported him last year.
Archie Heywood began the challenge on 1st January, having never completed a 5km run before. He is now almost halfway through.
Archie said he first contacted the Samaritans after a difficult period with his mental health, following advice from his dad.
“The last year was a particularly tough year for me, with my mental health,” said Archie.
“This challenge is my way of turning that experience into something positive and raising awareness for an issue that affects so many people in our community. I hope my story encourages others to talk openly about mental health and support those who may be struggling.”
“There’s been a few ups and downs, but I’m definitely getting used to it now. Most days I’ll do it on my own, I have done a couple with my mate, Liam, but other than that, I just run with my headphones on.”
Archie credits running with helping him cope and improving his wellbeing.
“Running makes me a lot happier, I reckon. I don’t know what it is, but it’s definitely helping my mental health; just to get outside and get running and just get moving. I’ve decided I’m not going to do any of them on a treadmill, so I’m outside every day.
“It’s definitely been tough, but it’s helping people and spreading a message. It’s helped my mental health, and hopefully it can save a couple of people’s lives as well.”
Samaritans is charity dedicated to reducing feelings of isolation and disconnection that can lead to suicide. People in crisis can call their free hotline and are connected to trained volunteers that will listen all day, every day.
“I know how much it can mean to have someone listen when things feel overwhelming,” said Archie. “Samaritans are available 24/7 for anyone who needs to talk, and the work they do genuinely saves lives.”
“Donations really do make a difference. For example, around £10 can help Samaritans answer a potentially life-saving call or message, while larger donations help keep their services running around the clock. Any contribution, big or small, helps ensure that no one has to face their darkest moments alone.”
