News From The Clubs: The Athenaeum Singers

New tenor Ian Bell joined The Athenaeum Singers in January this year, and despite not having any experience in singing in choirs, performed in their highly successful concert featuring Puccini’s Gloria and a selection of Opera choruses in June, a mere five months later.

The seed that started this growth was attending a previous concert at the invitation of a choir member.  Ian was looking for a new activity for the winter months and spurred on by his wife’s encouragement in telling him he had a good voice, was determined to meet the challenge and master the skills.

Ian was apprehensive at turning up to the first rehearsal but found he was made very welcome.

Sandwiched between two experienced tenors providing welcome support, he realised that when faced with unfamiliar music, the whole choir were embarking on the project together.

New singers are offered the first three rehearsals without commitment but for Ian, giving up was not an option!

Ian says the online support was brilliant.  He spent a lot of time singing to his computer which offered endless opportunities to practice in the comfort of his own home, initially his own tenor line but later fitting this into a full performance.

There were discouragements, one being the ‘sheer amount of stuff to get your head around’.  He didn’t read music, and initially it was a challenge just to turn the page at the right time.  Another was being faced with words in several different foreign languages – Italian, German and Latin. But gradually his confidence grew, although he stresses, “You have got to want to do it – it would have been so much easier to walk away!”

Concert time arrived, and on the Friday night rehearsal before the performance, Ian remembers thinking, “This isn’t going to work!”. But the next day, with the orchestra and soloists in attendance, everything came together.

“It was so uplifting, one of the most amazing things I’ve ever done,” he said. He was on a real high throughout the exhilarating performance, so much so that the buzz “that was brilliant” ran through his head most of the following day. His family guests thought it was a wonderful evening and were amazed at the standard of the performance

Ian attributes a lot of his success and enjoyment to Music Director Thomas Mottershead, whom he describes as so helpful and inspirational.  He stresses how important it is to watch Thomas, which builds your confidence and provides cues to keep you on track. In Thomas, the singers have an outstanding musician and teacher who helps everyone achieve their best, whilst keeping a relaxed and humorous approach.

It is hard to convey Ian’s enthusiasm in mere words, and he seems positively overwhelmed by the experience.  Most of all, he wants to encourage others to grasp the opportunity and give it a go.  You will be most welcome.  The singers meet on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm at Christ Church, Warminster, commencing on 2nd September.

  • Wellbeing Hub co-founders recognised as Wiltshire’s Most Inspiring Women

Two local women who have helped transform community life in Warminster have been recognised with a major regional honour.

Dr Charity Chenga and Lydia Moore, co-founders of the Wellbeing Hub Warminster, were recently voted Swindon and Wiltshire’s Most Inspiring Women in the Business Exchange (TBE) awards.

The award celebrates their dedication to creating a welcoming town centre hub, which hosts a range of community events.

“We are so grateful for the nominations, it means so much to receive the recognition when we are simply doing what we love,” said Lydia, who has lived in Warminster for over 20 years and worked at Princecroft Primary School for 16 years.

“Our shared vision is to create an inclusive environment where wellbeing is approached in a holistic way, supporting mental health, cultural identity, learning, creativity and social connection.”

  • Warminster teen wins gold at national Taekwondo championships

A 13-year-old from Warminster has won a gold medal at the English National Taekwondo Championships this month.

Jake Ayre won gold in the boys’ black belt category in the martial art of taekwondo at the championships, held in Worcester.

“I am really proud of myself to have made this achievement as I have been working hard over the past three years since I made my black belt grade,” said Jake, a student at Kingdown School.

Jake’s recent achievement comes after he won double gold at the South West Championships earlier this year and beat more than 100 other black belts in the area to win a grading award at the end of 2025.

His parents, Ben and Steph, said, “We are incredibly proud of Jake’s continuous achievement in the sport. Every week Jake is focused and ready for every session. His dedicated practice at home has paid dividends, even more so as Jake has tried three times before at national level, but was always pipped at the post.

  • Warminster Museum Column: The railway comes to Warminster

The early railway companies would always do what they could to reach the towns.

There were constraints, however. The railways avoided slopes and they would aim to keep the track free of awkward bends, so some towns were inconveniently positioned.

There are several instances where the closest that the track could approach the town was as much as a mile distant. Much of the town’s activity would begin to move closer to the station and the town would develop a new centre, resulting in “Old Town” and “New Town”.

This problem did not apply to Warminster. The line could approach Warminster quite easily, so then Warminster had a new problem. Where should the station be sited? Having decided where the station should be, it must be accessible. In Warminster, making the station accessible resulted in Station Road.

Three map sections show the major alterations necessary to construct Station Road. The old map, drawn in 1780, shows the original area where Market Place meets East Street.

The next map is the original map with our Post Office (one corner of the new junction) and the new, rounded corner building, superposed. These two new buildings are shown in blue.

The third map shows the junction in 1970 and this is the corner that we know today.

  • Community event to showcase local health services

A community event bringing together over 40 local health organisations is set to return to Warminster soon.

The Warminster Health and Wellbeing Fair will return in May to allow residents to connect with local health organisations providing expert advice and support.

“This community event celebrates the rich variety of health services available right on your doorstep,” said Dave Reeves from Health and Wellbeing Warminster, which is organising the fair.

“This is the perfect opportunity to engage with service providers and explore new ways to boost your wellbeing.”

  • Parents join schoolchildren for lesson on habitats

Parents joined their children at Sambourne Primary School for a special lesson on living things and their habitats.

Wren Class invited parents to their annual inspire session based on their science topic, living things and their habitats.

“It was absolutely wonderful to see so many of our Year 5 and 6 parents join us for the inspire session,” said Year 5/6 teacher Mr Morgan. “Watching families work side by side, designing and building their own bug hotels, was such a joy.

“These sessions are a really special part of the year for us - they give children the chance to share their learning and creativity with the people who matter most to them. It’s something we always look forward to, and once again it was a fantastic success.”

  • Athenaeum receives funding boost from housing developer

Warminster’s historic Athenaeum has received a £1,000 funding boost to support the running of the town’s Grade II listed theatre.

The donation has been made by Jubilee Garden’s housebuilder Persimmon Homes Wessex through its Community Champions scheme.

Jon Ellis, Vice-Chair of the Athenaeum Trust, said, “Running a Grade-II listed building is not without challenges, and some considerable costs, so whilst we can secure grant-funding for specific physical projects, it’s great to have the support of local organisations such as Persimmon that allow us the ability to invest in other areas such as development and training of volunteers and support tools to enable us to operate more efficiently.

“We hope that the new residents of Jubilee Gardens come to love and enjoy the Athenaeum, as so many locals have done over the years, contributing to making Warminster a great place to live and relax.”

  • Toad party brings community together to support toad patrol

A toad party brought the local community together for a day of education and fun to raise funds and awareness for the Warminster Toad Patrol group.

Attendees were able to see live amphibians and their spawn up close, speak to wildlife experts, buy items from local sellers and take part in games and crafts. Winners of the toad patrol’s poster competition were also crowned at the event.

“There was plenty to keep everyone entertained, from a fantastic raffle packed with brilliant prizes to a lucky dip, teddy tombola and a toad-themed gift stall,” said Amy Darbyshire from Warminster Toad Patrol. “Croaks of Wisdom also proved popular, offering fortunes to anyone brave enough to discover theirs.

“We were delighted to welcome Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, who helped inspire the next generation to care about our wonderful Smallbrook Nature Reserve. We were also joined by some brilliant local sellers – Pixie and Pickle, Button and Squirt and Naturally Eccentric Art – all showcasing products connected to our conservation cause.

“All in all, it was a joyful, busy and heartwarming day, and a fantastic show of community spirit in support of our toads.”

  • Last chance to have your say on the Warminster Neighbourhood Plan

Time is running out for residents to voice how their town develops over the next 15 years by giving their input on the draft Warminster Neighbourhood Plan 2.

The consultation remains open until midnight on Monday 23rd March as the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group looks to collect feedback from the whole of the town.

Warminster Mayor, Cllr Andrew Cooper, is calling on all members of the community to act now and add their voice to this public consultation.

He said, “Everyone in Warminster can say exactly what they think – what they like, what they don’t like, what they think should remain in the Plan, what should be added in and what they feel should be removed.

“The Neighbourhood Plan is a working document, a draft which will improve through each and every contribution from all members of the community.

“Please, I urge all the people of Warminster to study and consider this vital document and add their own thoughts and feeling. Residents do not need to comment on everything, just the issues that concern them. Everybody can express their views. The Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group want the best for Warminster.”

  • Hospital charity celebrates 20 years of sponsored walk

The 20th annual sponsored Walk of Life is being held on Saturday 23rd May, hosted by RUHX, the official charity of the Royal United Hospitals Bath.

The Walk of Life started in 2006 thanks to sisters Nic and Ness who were both determined to raise funds to improve cancer facilities at the RUH.

“Vanessa, known by her friends and family as ‘Ness’, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000,” said Ellie Wilkinson-Brown, the Events & Community Manager at RUHX. “She received her treatment from a fantastic team at the RUH, but during this time was aware that the facilities were out of date and in desperate need of replacing. Ness sadly passed away after the cancer progressed in 2007, but she made Nic promise to carry on their passion for fundraising.

“Nic has kept her promise by leading the Walk of Life every year since in memory of her sister, finding comfort in meeting other walkers who have been through similar journeys.”
