Warminster Museum: An interesting photograph

Warminster Museum: An interesting photograph

A photoraph, captured in the brief period of time that it takes the camera shutter open and close, is a time capsule.

This photograph was taken by Fred Futcher, whose shop and studio were at Café Journal in the High Street, and it is so full of interest that a short article can only point out a few of the interesting features.

It was taken some time in the 1890s. The Ship Inn is still in reasonably good repair and was probably still in business. It still had its license, because Mr Hicks, the baker whose shop is at extreme right, was hoping to get the license transferred to him when the Ship would be demolished to open the way for The Close.

No.3 High Street, the building across the road, demolished very recently, seems to be thriving as a draper’s shop. John Day, the shopkeeper, has close competition, because there is another draper, Mr Coxall, across the road in what is now a delicatessen. Both shops are offering cleaning and dying, but this service is not done on the premises. John uses Pullars of Perth, Mr Coxall uses Mortimers of Plymouth. It was the railway that had made it possible for Pullar and Mortimer to offer their services nationwide.

The most striking feature of the photograph is the horse trough and the large gas lamp. On the side of the horse trough is a quote from the Bible, Book of Proverbs: “A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast”. A fine horse trough and a fine lamp, but both could be troublesome.

The prevailing wind from the west, would sometimes funnel up the High Street and blow the lamp out. Occasionally, the trough would overflow, and water would run down High Street. Normally, this would be little more than a nuisance, but when the overflow froze in the winter, it could be much more of a problem.

Going back to the left side of the picture, there is a young lady in a white dress and a white hat. She is standing in front of a very fine house. Behind this house were extensive pleasure grounds, so the owners of this house were people of some standing. When Woolworths came to Warminster, they purchased this building and they obtained planning permission convert its use to one of their stores. The planning permit was granted on the condition that the façade and some features of the building, would be preserved. Woolworths sent in their surveyor, and he declared that these conditions could not be met and that the building would have to be pulled down. It must have been important to have Woolworths in town, because the building was pulled down and replaced with what is now Sports Direct.

Moving further down, you may notice that The Factory Shop had a front garden and that Domino’s Pizza shop was a much lower building than it is today.

And just what the strange wheeled conveyance outside the Ship Inn may be is a puzzle.  An invalid carriage, perhaps.

  • Charity thanks founding trustees and seeks volunteers

A Warminster charity supporting people affected by loneliness and social isolation has thanked two founding trustees for their years of service while encouraging more volunteers to get involved.

Michael Tansey and Deborah Gogarty recently stepped down as trustees of Open Door Warminster, which runs Chat Cafes and support groups in the town. Marion Barton has also stepped down as chair of the trustees, but she and Michael will continue supporting the charity as volunteers.

“It is with heartfelt thanks that the trustees wish to thank Michael Tansey for all his hard work on the board and Deborah Gogarty for her outstanding support behind the scenes with governance, administration and fundraising,” said a spokesperson.

“The trustees look forward to working together to support the future cafes with all the generous help provided by their volunteers. It is such a vital and well used facility for those in Warminster and surrounding areas.”

“We are incredibly grateful to Katherine for her ongoing dedication and generosity,” said fundraising and events coordinator Amanda Strong. “Raising over £1,200 in a single event is an amazing achievement and her support makes a real and tangible difference to the people we care for.”

  • Bringing 350 years of eye and ear care experience to the community

Local residents can expect a high standard of care when they visit a Warminster opticians and audiologists as the team has clocked up more than 350 years of service between them.

The hugely impressive total has been achieved thanks to the loyalty and dedication of the 27 colleagues who work at the locally owned and run Specsavers in Three Horseshoes Walk. Contact lens optician and store manager, Julie Tavener, marked 30 years with the store last year, while audiology director and hearing aid dispenser, Alison Edwards, and dispensing optician, Vicki Towers, both celebrated 25 years with the business in 2025.

Whether it’s looking after the eyes or ears of the local community, the combined knowledge and expertise throughout the team spans decades. Longest serving are Monica Coles and Patricia Bull, who each have 37 years’ service, through to newer recruits like Samantha Pritchard, who joined a year ago.

“I knew we had a lot of experience across the team, but I was blown away when we realised it was more than 350 years,” said Richard Goring, store director at Specsavers Warminster. “I’m really grateful to have such dedicated, skilled and reliable colleagues."

  • Hebe-Fitness helps Warminster mums get back to fitness

Fitness classes are helping new mothers in Warminster regain fitness and confidence and improve wellbeing.

At Hebe-Fitness, the ladies only studio, babies are welcome alongside their mums, helping make exercise more accessible, enjoyable and realistic during the early years of motherhood.

“Many new mums are eager to regain their fitness and confidence after having a baby, but finding time to exercise can be difficult when childcare is limited,” said Stacey Marchmont from Hebe-Fitness.”For many women, the challenge is not motivation – it’s simply having no one available to look after their little one while they attend a class.

“Mother-and-baby fitness classes are becoming increasingly popular because they remove that barrier, allowing mums to improve their physical and mental wellbeing without needing separate childcare."

  • Charity appeals for support to help local boy

A Warminster charity which supports children with life-limiting conditions is appealing for donations from the community to fund life-changing equipment for a local boy.

Wonder Wards is aiming to raise £5,000 to fund a specialised wheelchair for Isak Palmer, a four-year-old boy from Trowbridge who lives with multiple conditions including a serious heart defect and cerebral palsy.

“The wheelchair is £5,000 in total which, sadly, we don’t have the funds to simply purchase outright,” said charity founder Leigh Gilles. “I really wish we did, but we can still hopefully raise 10 to 20 per cent of the cost.

“I have already guaranteed the family £500 from our current beneficiary pot so anything the public donate now will be added to that amount.

“This wheelchair will improve Isak’s day to day life immeasurably.”

  • Longleat lion queen dies aged 20

The queen of one of Longleat’s prides of lions has died, just months before her 21st birthday.

Jasira, one of the oldest lions in human care in the UK, died after a short illness earlier this month.

“Several of our lions have or are reaching this grand age, and whilst it is always sad when we lose an animal, particularly a stalwart like Jasira, we are very proud that she lived as long as she did as her age is testament to the care she received here,” said carnivore team manager Amy Waller. “In the wild, lions live to around 12 to 14 years of age.”

Longleat recently revealed a new pride was being created with the arrival of two female southern lions.

The naming of the new arrivals has been open to public vote with the winners due to be announced later this month.
