Two friends who live at Homeminster House in Warminster have grown a sunflower they believe to be around 14ft tall.
Penelope Cox-Carter, 86, and Nora Fox, 92, have been friends for around 10 years and tend the rear gardens of Homeminster House together.
This year, they had a ‘wonderful yield’ of sunflowers, including one particularly towering plant that was grown from a seed planted by Penelope’s great-granddaughter, Tilly. They estimate this sunflower has reached around 14ft.
“The one outside Nora’s flat is really, really high, nearly up to the second-floor windows.
“I’ve never seen one in my life as tall as this, and the stem is like a tree trunk!” said Penelope.
Despite its height, the sunflower does not require support. “It’s standing up there all alone, and now it’s got about five or six heads on it,” Penelope added.
“We’ve tried to measure it, but it has grown a lot since then. My grandson visited last week – he’s 6ft 7in -and it was twice his height!”
