Warminster Carnival to light up the town this weekend

Warminster Carnival returns this weekend with a colourful procession set to bring the town’s streets to life.

The light-up procession kicks off at 6.45pm on Saturday 25th October and will feature the carnival royalty, alongside majorettes, masqueraders, dancers, marching bands and colourful floats.

Starting from Boreham Road, the procession will make its way through East Street, the Market Place, High Street, George Street and Silver Street, finishing outside Warminster School in Church Street.

“Our dedicated committees and tireless entrants have been pulling off miracles,” said Antony Streets, Wessex Carnival Chairperson. “All this effort is to ensure that this year’s carnival is nothing short of spectacular for you and your families.”

The procession comes after a fortnight of fundraising events in the town.

Warminster Carnival Chairperson Sandra Major, who has been involved in carnivals for over 40 years and has been part of the Warminster committee for around 30, said, “This has been a very difficult year for the committee as we have sadly lost two of our committee, Jill Goodenough, who would have been in her 40th year on the committee, and John Rich, who had been on the committee for over 30 years.

“The carnival committee spend most of their year fundraising, so please show your appreciation by giving plenty of cheers as they go by.”

Funds raised from the carnival help keep the event running and support local charities. Visitors can buy flashing lights from Robert near the Three Horseshoes Walk, with all proceeds going to the carnival. Card donations will also be collected by Chairperson Sandra Major along the route, and floats will take cash donations, though attendees are asked not to throw money at participants.

Road closures will be in place for the procession: Boreham Crossroads to the Conservative Club from 4pm to 9pm, and Church Street to the Granada entrance from 6pm to 10pm.

  • Unpopular housing scheme back on table – at nearly twice the size

By Local Democracy Reporter Peter Davison

Proposals for a new housing estate next to a Warminster nature reserve have been submitted – with nearly twice as many houses as a scheme that was dropped in 2023.

Backhouse Housing wants to build 49 homes at Damask Way, on the south-eastern edge of the town.

Planning permission for 28 homes on the same 3.5-hectare site was granted to a separate developer in 2019.

And in 2022, Backhouse lodged, then withdrew, a planning application for housing, which was fiercely opposed by residents.

Now, the developer wants to build a range of one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom houses, with 30 per cent designated ‘affordable’.

Access to the estate would be via Upper Marsh Road, which was the access approved for the previous development.

  • Local pupils help improve town park

Pupils from Kingdown School have been helping to improve the environment at the Lake Pleasure Grounds through a partnership with the town council.

A group of Year 7 and 8 students worked with the council’s Parks and Estates team to build bug hotels, help prepare boats for the Spring in the Park event and support general park maintenance.

“I felt that there was a need for our young people to connect with the natural environment, make positive links with the local community and show just how fantastic our young people in Warminster are,” said Sarah Miller, head of house for Lord’s House at the school. “I contacted the town council just over a year ago to suggest that we develop links and they have been amazingly supportive in suggesting all kinds of projects.”

  • Police seize illegal e-bike in Warminster

Neighbourhood police officers in Warminster have been tackling ongoing issues with uninsured bikes, e-bikes and e-scooters in recent weeks.

An e-bike linked to anti-social behaviour in Warminster was seized on 28th May by officers from Response Team 4 after locating the rider and bike on Boreham Road.

The bike was seized for having no insurance and the rider was also reported at the scene for a number of road-related offences.

PC Kent said, “We have been aware of this particular bike for several weeks and the nature of the riding style which has been causing issues around Warminster. To remove this e-bike is a positive step.

  • Plans for 20mph speed limit in town centre

A 20MPH speed limit could be introduced on several town centre roads as a scheme aimed at improving safety and traffic flow moves forward.

The 20mph limit would cover a wide range of central streets, including Emwell Street, George Street, Silver Street and Market Place, alongside Coppice Close, Flers Court, George Street Place, High Street, Sambourne Gardens, Turnpike Court and sections of Sambourne Road, Vicarage Street and Weymouth Street.

It follows earlier discussions at town council level and a recommendation to the Local Highway and Footway Improvement Groups (LHFIG), which identified a number of locations as suitable for reduced speeds after assessment work and traffic monitoring.

The Wiltshire Council consultation is now open to residents and businesses, and runs until 13th July.
