Town win five-goal thriller with last-gasp penalty

Warminster Town welcomed Nailsea United to Weymouth Street on Saturday, just five weeks after suffering a 3–2 defeat to the same opposition on the opening day of the season.

Town were determined to put that result right and once again started the match brightly, putting Nailsea under pressure and looking the more threatening side.

The breakthrough came before half-time when Walker Haynes produced excellent work to cut the ball back into the box, allowing assistant manager Matt Morris to finish and give Warminster a deserved 1–0 lead going into the interval.

Nailsea came out strongly after the restart, with some of their key players beginning to gain a foothold in the game.

With Warminster’s full-backs already on yellow cards, Nailsea looked to exploit the situation and eventually found a way through. Their number two got in behind Toby Worts before firing the ball across goal and beyond Sam Jepson to make it 1–1.

Town responded brilliantly. Morris was once again at the heart of the action, producing great work before delivering a superb cross into the area. Paul Braithwaite met it perfectly, executing a superb half-volley from the edge of the box which flew into the bottom corner to restore Warminster’s lead.

With just five minutes remaining, however, Town once again found themselves unable to hold onto an advantage.

Nailsea were awarded a penalty and made no mistake from the spot, bringing the score level at 2–2.

With the referee adding a huge 12 minutes of additional time, Warminster continued to push for a winner.

And in the dying seconds, they were handed one final opportunity when Braithwaite was judged to have been fouled inside the penalty area. Up stepped Walton.

The pressure was immense, but the Nailsea goalkeeper saved the initial spot-kick. Walton, however, reacted quickest and followed up on the rebound to send the ball into the net and send Weymouth Street into scenes of celebration.
