Children at St John’s CofE School have enjoyed a range of Easter activities.
All of the pupils in Key Stage 2 visited St John’s Church for an Easter experience run by Sheelagh Wurr and a group of local volunteers, many of whom are part of the church’s ‘Open The Book’ team, who regularly visit the school to bring to life stories from the Bible.
The children moved around the church, visiting different stations to help them develop their understanding of the Easter story.
At the house where Jesus washed his disciples’ feet, the children talked about how Jesus served others, which helped them think about the chores they might do around their homes to help their families, or how they could support others at school.
Charlotte Walker, assistant head, said, “One child even suggested smiling at others when out and about as a way of spreading love, just as Jesus taught his disciples to do.
“Meanwhile, children in Reception Class and Key Stage 1 had a wonderful time in Cookery Club decorating Easter biscuits. Everyone enjoyed choosing their icing colours and array of sprinkle toppings to create their own designs.
“Next came a very important Easter egg hunt, enjoyed by the whole school.
“Great excitement rippled through the school when Mr Hortop, headteacher, shared with the children that he had heard some unusual rustling noises around the school. The Easter Bunny had visited and hidden eggs all over the school – even in the headteacher’s office – for the children to find. Each class took it in turns to hunt for their eggs.
“There was lots of laughter when the children found them in some very unusual places – even inside the oven in the food technology room! Thanks to the PTA (aka the Easter Bunny), this event was a huge success.
“The term ended with a service at St John’s Church, led by all of the Year 3 and Year 4 children in Battlesbury Class. The church was full to bursting with families who came to join the school for this special Easter celebration. Within the service, Battlesbury Class re-told the Easter story through narration and acting, which they all thoroughly enjoyed.
“The choir, led by Marcia Northeast, enthralled everyone with their beautiful singing of For God So Loved the World and Three Days That Changed the World.
“Finally, pupils sent everyone on their way with a cheery rendition of a song called Chocolate, ensuring that everyone was ready for an Easter egg or two!”
