Mayor’s Christmas message

Mayor’s Christmas message

Christmas is a time of year when we can all be grateful for the good things that we are able to enjoy.

At the heart of the Christmas story is a really important truth: when things are hard and difficult, goodness will always come through in the end.

The original Christmas story is one of great joy and celebration, but also of a tiny baby who was born in extremely difficult and fragile circumstances. We celebrate that birth at Christmas because, whether we proclaim a Christian faith or not, we have learned over the centuries that good always comes through in the end – that is our hope.

It’s easy to say, I know, but it is the lived experience of so many down through the generations. It may not happen overnight, but it usually happens over time!

This is a time of year, also, to stop and give thanks for the good things that we receive and those in our lives who somehow make life easier. I would like to give thanks to my Deputy and all the town councillors and, of course, all of the council officers who are employed in the civic centre and around the town positively contributing to the lives we live in this lovely town.

On a personal level I give thanks for the love and kindness of my extended family and for good and faithful friends who also enrich my life. This year, another beautiful grandson was added to our number and to the town of Warminster. A rich blessing indeed!

Mostly, though, as we approach Christmas, I would like to thank you, the wonderful people of Warminster for your support and kindness to me during my mayoral year and for contributing, all of you, to the wonderful and truly special place Warminster is. It has been one of the greatest privileges and honours of my life to serve as your mayor since May of this year.

I would like to ask one thing of you all – please reach out this Christmas to those whom you know to be less fortunate or who are alone, to enrich their lives and to make their Christmas a little happier.

However you celebrate, and whomever you celebrate with, I wish you all every happiness and much peace this Christmas and good health and harmony in the New Year to come.

Andrew Cooper

  • Daytime classical concerts at Warminster Civic Centre

Bath-based Trio Paradis are continuing their popular series of Café Concerts at Warminster Civic Centre next month, part of a programme of more than 120 daytime performances they give each year across Wiltshire and Somerset.

The concerts are designed to make live classical music accessible to new audiences – particularly those who may find it difficult to attend evening events including those without transport, with limited finances or in full-time caring roles.

The trio – Jacquelyn Bevan (piano), Ruth O’Shea (violin) and Linda Stocks (cello) – perform at the Civic Centre on the first Friday of most months at 3pm.

The next concert takes place on Friday 1st May with the theme of Folk Connections, including The Banks of Green Willow by George Butterworth and the highly atmospheric Phantasy Trio by Irish composer Joan Trimble.

On Friday 5th June the programme is Iberia: music of Spain and Portugal.

  • Community ribbon display celebrates inclusion

A colourful community ribbon display has been created at a Warminster home for adults with learning disabilities to mark Autism Acceptance Week and highlight a message of inclusion and support.

The Willows on Boreham Road, which is run by the Autonomy Care Group, encouraged local people who passed by the home to tie a ribbon on its railings and fill the space with colour.

“The theme of this year’s celebration is colour, so we have tried to make our home as bright as possible,” said Manager Kayleigh Harding. “It goes further than that for us. Our home has been here 20+ years, and we wanted to show the residents here that they are accepted by the community.

  • Warminster bids to become UK’s first Town of Culture

Warminster has taken the first step in its bid to become the UK’s first Town of Culture in 2028, with the town council submitting an expression of interest to the national competition.

The new Department for Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) competition gives towns a chance to win up to £3 million to deliver a cultural programme in 2028 of around six months.

The first stage involves submitting an online plan which may be awarded £60,000 in funding to work up a more detailed set of proposals.

Tom Dommett, Warminster Town Clerk, said, “The aim of the competition is not to judge which town has the best cultural offering at the moment but to decide which town could most improve its cultural offer if it was given the ultimate prize of £3 million."

  • Seminar series launches at Wellbeing Hub

A series of seminars at the Wellbeing Hub Warminster will bring community voices and professional research together.

The first session takes place on Saturday 25th April from 12pm to 5.30pm, with events planned every two months.

The hub is a growing research centre built around four pillars: social and cultural inclusion, research and healthcare, research and development and ecotourism and international conservation. The seminars aim to spark discussion around these themes, combining professional insight with residents’ experiences.

“The whole point of these seminars and of the research centre is to bring community voices and professional researchers together,” said Dr Charity Chenga, who co-founded the hub alongside Lydia Moore.

“Community members are really busy doing a lot of things and also, they have an experience and understanding of things that researchers and professionals don’t have an understanding of. It’s lovely to bring everyone together to actually discuss some of these issues and have a place where people feel they can express these things so that they can filter from professionals into communities."

  • Dementia charity memory walk to return to Warminster

A fundraising walk for a local dementia charity is returning to Warminster this May.

Beyond Dementia’s ‘A Walk to Remember’ will take place on Saturday 9th May, with residents invited to take part.

Walkers and runners will have a choice of two routes: the 7.5-mile Battlesbury Circuit, a more challenging trek that takes participants through Smallbrook Meadows, up Middle Hill and Battlesbury Hill before returning to the finish, or the Meadow Mile, a gentle one-mile stroll around Smallbrook Meadows, ideal for families or anyone seeking a shorter route.

Money raised will help the charity support people living with dementia in Wiltshire, including those who attend the Old Silk Works day club in Warminster.

Community Fundraising Manager Rachel Fear said, “After a three-year break, we’re delighted to welcome back our Memory Walk to Warminster.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to support people living with dementia while connecting with our local community, and we hope you will join us for what promises to be a truly fantastic event.”

  • Splash pad to reopen with extended opening hours

The splash pad in Warminster’s Lake Pleasure Grounds will open for the season on Friday 24th April with extended opening times.

The popular attraction will be open daily from 10am to 6pm, an extra hour compared to previous years.

The attraction, which opened in 2022, has several water features and has attracted thousands of visitors since opening.

“The Lake Pleasure Grounds and splash pad are loved by the people of Warminster and we’re delighted to open for an extra hour this year,” said a Warminster Town Council spokesperson. “Make a day of visiting the park and enjoying our wonderful community space.”

The nearby Pavilion Parlour is open seven days a week, selling ice cream, drinks and snacks as well as splash pad accessories.

  • Warminster young carer elected to UK Youth Parliament

A young carer from Warminster will take their voice to the national stage after being elected to the UK Youth Parliament, marking the latest step in a growing role representing young people.

Kit Hopkins has cared for their mum Sarah since the age of four, supporting her through multiple long-term health conditions including polycystic fibrosis dysplasia and brittle bone disease.

Kit was elected to the Young Carers Council before joining Wiltshire Youth Council in February and was selected for the Youth Parliament last month to champion the views of young carers and represent Wiltshire on a national scale.

“Ever since I was younger, I knew I wanted to make a positive difference in our local community and help create a place people are proud to live in,” said Kit. “I never knew how I would be able to make that difference, but I have now taken that first step towards my goals of making Wiltshire a much better environment.

“I want to make changes that will benefit everyone: children, teenagers, adults, parents, the elderly, people with disabilities and learning difficulties and anyone who decides to visit wonderful Wiltshire.”

  • ‘Roarminster’ set for dinosaur invasion this summer!

Warminster is set to be transformed into ‘Roarminster’ this summer as a free family dinosaur trail comes to town.

Five dinosaur models will be installed at various locations across the town from early July. The free exhibition is set to run for the duration of the summer holidays, with events scheduled throughout.

“Roarminster is about creating something fun, memorable and family-friendly for Warminster,” said Deputy Mayor Jack Jones. “The dinosaur trail will encourage people to explore the town centre while supporting local businesses.”
