A 20MPH speed limit could be introduced on several town centre roads as a scheme aimed at improving safety and traffic flow moves forward.
The 20mph limit would cover a wide range of central streets, including Emwell Street, George Street, Silver Street and Market Place, alongside Coppice Close, Flers Court, George Street Place, High Street, Sambourne Gardens, Turnpike Court and sections of Sambourne Road, Vicarage Street and Weymouth Street.
It follows earlier discussions at town council level and a recommendation to the Local Highway and Footway Improvement Groups (LHFIG), which identified a number of locations as suitable for reduced speeds after assessment work and traffic monitoring.
The Wiltshire Council consultation is now open to residents and businesses, and runs until 13th July.
Cllr Martin Smith, Cabinet Member for Highways, said, “Through the Local Highway and Footway Improvement Group (LHFIG), Warminster Town Council requested that we assess the potential for introducing a 20mph speed limit in the town centre and that assessment has now identified a number of roads which may be suitable.
“Introducing 20mph speed limits in appropriate locations can bring a range of benefits to communities, including reducing the likelihood and severity of collisions, improving safety for pedestrians and cyclists, and creating a more welcoming environment for people who choose to walk, wheel or cycle.
“They can also help improve air quality and support healthier, more sustainable travel choices, particularly in busy town centre areas.
“We want to ensure any changes reflect the needs of the local community, so we encourage residents and businesses to share their views as part of the decision-making process.”
