Warminster Athenaeum has a busy month ahead with an exciting lineup of events.
The venue says there will be “something for everyone” with productions ranging from a family musical and live comedy to classic films and community events.
Leading the programme is Shrek The Musical, presented by the Athenaeum Masqueraders. The Tony Award-winning stage adaptation of the Oscar-winning smash hit film follows Shrek and Donkey on a fairy-tale adventure featuring well-known characters, comedy and live music.
Performances take place from Wednesday 27th May to Saturday 30th May, including a matinee and evening show on the Saturday. See full story on page 15.
Family audiences can also enjoy The Zoo That Comes To You on Sunday 14th June. The production by Scarlet Oak Theatre combines puppetry, live music and storytelling to explore animal conservation themes through a travelling sanctuary of rescued animals.
Two performances are planned at 11am and 2pm, with organisers saying the show is suitable for ages five and above.
Comedy fans will be able to see comedian Marcus Brigstocke headline the Warminster Comedy Club on Sunday 21st June.
One of the most recognisable and respected comedians in the country, his intelligent, satirical comedy and razor-sharp delivery, has been seen on Live at the Apollo, Mock the Week, Have I Got News For You, and The Graham Norton Show.
The event will also feature rising star David Arnold, with Rich Wilson – winner of the Comics’ Comic 2025 Best MC award – hosting the evening.
Music from the 1980s will take centre stage on Friday 5th June when Word Up 80s performs at the venue. The live band will take you on an unforgettable journey through the decade of big hair, neon and epic anthems.
“Dust off your leg warmers, grab your friends, and let’s party like it’s 1985!” says the Athenaeum. “Expect anthems from the likes of Madonna, Tears for Fears, Whitney Houston, Tina Turner, Fleetwood Mac, Wham!, Rick Astley, Lionel Richie, Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel and many more!”
The Athenaeum will also host several film and screening events.
The Colour Room, based on the life of ceramic artist Clarice Cliff, will be shown on Wednesday 3rd June as part of the Warminster and District Film Society programme.
National Theatre Live’s production of Playboy of the Western World will be screened on Saturday 6th June. Nicola Coughlan (Bridgerton) joins Éanna Hardwicke (The Sixth Commandment) and Siobhán McSweeney (Derry Girls) in John Millington Synge’s riveting play of youth and self-discovery.
On Thursday 11th June, there is a chance to join Sustainable Warminster for
a screening of the People’s Emergency Briefing – an eye-opening film bringing together nine leading UK scientists and experts with the latest evidence on extreme weather, food security, health and the cost of living.
After the film there will be a short open discussion about what it means for the local community and what can be done locally. Free tickets are available, although seats must be booked in advance.
