Short story competitions launch in Warminster

Two competitions have been launched encouraging adults and young people in Warminster to write short stories.

The competitions are organised by the Warminster Book Festival, which will return in 2027. There are two categories: young adults, for those aged 11 to 18, and adults, for those over 18.

Young adults are invited to write stories of up to 500 words with the title “Mirror.” Book token prizes will be awarded to the top three entries.

“This corresponds to the annual BBC format and gives students who enter the national competition a chance to submit the same or a modified entry to the Warminster Book Festival competition,” said Mark Thorpe from the festival.

“We plan for a young author to judge the entries, and we would like to see many diverse and creative pieces of work.”

The adult category will have the title “They walked through the woods and…” with a word limit of 1,000.

“Enter to be in with a chance of your name being on our cup or winning a cash prize,” said Mark.

To enter, email a PDF copy of your story to warminsterbookfestival@gmail.com by Friday 1st May.

Winners from both competitions will be announced at the Warminster Independent Market on Sunday 28th June.

  • Wiltshire Council launches community lottery

By Local Democracy Reporter Peter Davison

Wiltshire Council has launched its own community lottery with prizes up to £25,000.

Proceeds from the Wiltshire Community Lottery will go to good causes in the county.

Warminster recipients include Open Door Warminster, Warminster Athenaeum Trust and Beyond Dementia, which runs a day club in Warminster.

Players can choose exactly which local cause they want their money to support.

For every £1 ticket, 50p goes directly to the player’s chosen good causes, with 10p going to the central fund, which the council will redirect into local good causes via Wiltshire Area Boards.

  • Cierpicki scores maiden century

The highlight from the round of fixtures played on 9th May was the 126 runs scored by Jude Cierpicki for Warminster Cricket Club 2nd XI.

The Warminster 1st XI took on the Hinton Charterhouse 1st XI at Sambourne Road for their first home match of the season. The opponents were put into bat and made steady progress against the Warminster bowlers, reaching 293 runs for the loss of eight wickets from their 50 overs.

Whilst the wickets were shared around, Liam Carpenter returned the best bowling figures, taking three wickets for 54 runs. Unfortunately, the majority of the Warminster batsmen were unable to convert promising starts into match defining innings, with Warminster finally all out for 177 runs and losing by 116 runs.

  • Warminster Museum: Whitsun

Whit-Monday was a time of parades for many organisations. The Whit Walks were still very popular with Sunday schools in many parts of the country until Whitsun was replaced by the Spring Bank Holiday.

The Whitsun Parade was not confined to Sunday schools; the photograph shows the preparations for the annual Whitsun parade of the Foresters mutual benefit society.

The Foresters formed their parade in the Market Place, outside the Australian Hotel (The Old Bell), where William Wilcox (or Brother Wilcox) was the landlord. You can see from the cutting from the Warminster Journal, that a good time was about to be had by all.

When the Sunday schools paraded, a girl who had regularly attended Sunday school and church for a year would be selected as the May Queen. To be the May Queen was greatly to be desired by young girls, but the May Queen had to be dressed in suitable fine array, and this was an expense that few parents could afford. Disappointed young girls was an unfortunate part of the Sunday school Whit Walks.

  • Gas network upgrade planned across Warminster

Gas pipes across Warminster are set to be upgraded over the next year as part of a major improvement programme.

Wales & West Utilities will replace nearly eight kilometres of gas pipes in Hollybush Road, Smallbrook Road, Ashley Combe, Pepper Place, East End Avenue, Pound Street and Imber Road.

More than £2.3million is being invested in the project, with the gas emergency and pipeline service working with Wiltshire Council to manage any necessary traffic measures.

Mick Gallavin, who is managing the project, said, “We’re investing in our gas network to ensure it remains safe, reliable and fit for the future for the customers we serve across Warminster.

“We’ll continue to work closely with local authorities, and keep communities informed as projects are planned and delivered."

  • Children bring learning to life in school museum day

Pupils at a local primary school exhibited their homework projects during a museum day last month.

Children at Crockerton C of E Primary School worked in their school houses to create dedicated museum rooms throughout the school. Pupils served as experts in the rooms, teaching each other about their work.

“This year our museum had a space room, a room about Crockerton and London, an Egyptian room with pyramids and pharaohs and our oldest children shared their research and homework about disasters,” said Headteacher Nic Ilic.

Projects on display included a recreation of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami in a shoebox, models of London landmarks and artwork of Ancient Egyptian death masks.

  • Bishop blesses new chapel at primary school

Pupils at a local primary school were visited by the Bishop of Clifton who blessed the school’s new chapel area.

Pupils at St George’s Catholic Primary School led readings and prayers in a special service in which the Right Reverend Bosco MacDonald blessed the school’s chapel.

“Following the blessing, two Year 6 pupils guided the bishop on a tour of the school,” said religious education lead Tegan Brown. “As he visited classrooms, he offered blessings and spoke with children, who eagerly asked thoughtful questions and engaged warmly with him.

  • Spotlight on: The Warminster Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club

The Warminster Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club runs a monthly meet in Warminster for veterans to socialise.

The club meets on the third Saturday of every month at The Cock Inn in Warminster at 10.30am, with breakfast served from 11am.

“This gathering allows members to get together and have a bit of squaddie banter and breakfast without having to explain themselves,” said a spokesperson from the club.

“Sharing experiences and talking the same language will help individuals deal with a multitude of issues with likeminded service personnel in an environment where they feel comfortable, confident and safe.

  • Students shine in school’s first music festival

A new spring festival celebrating student talent both on and off the stage brought music, creativity and community spirit to Kingdown School recently.

The school campus was transformed for KingFest, which featured four stages, a design exhibition, market stalls, refreshments, creative activities and student enterprise stalls.

Students delivered a range of musical performances onstage, with many pupils also involved behind the scenes, taking on responsibility for sound and lighting, stage management, marshalling, design, catering and front-of-house support.

“I’m just really proud that our pre-Covid idea has finally sprung to life,” said Media and Events Technician Paul Barnes, who developed and coordinated the event. “I’m very glad that all the hard work from numerous staff behind the scenes paid off to give our young people a fantastic event that they can be proud of too.”

  • Local pupils learn emergency first aid skills

Volunteers from St John Ambulance visited Year 5 and 6 pupils at a local primary school to raise awareness of emergency first aid.

Kat Brawn and Tim Watts visited New Close Primary School to talk to the children about how to save a life as part of Wiltshire Police’s Mini Police programme.

The pupils had a go at practising CPR and were also educated on the use of a defibrillator, how to treat severe bleeding and choking, and how to assess a casualty and call for help.

“It was great to have St John Ambulance visit our mini police unit to teach them some lifesaving skills,” said PCSO Melissa Culliford. “The group thoroughly enjoyed an interactive session and were a shining example of the values we promote at Mini Police.”
