Theatre group to showcase talents in one-woman play

A local theatre group is branching out from its usual musicals to stage a one-woman production of Shirley Valentine at the Athenaeum this weekend.

Athenaeum Masqueraders, which traditionally puts on musicals, is presenting the Willy Russell play with its chairperson Claire Warren taking the title role.

There will be two performances on Saturday 12th September at 2.30pm and 7.30pm.

The play follows Shirley, a bored housewife who questions her everyday routine and wonders whether life could offer her something more.

Claire said, “Audiences can expect plenty of laughs, alongside some more thoughtful and emotional moments. The production promises to be an entertaining night out for both fans of the original story and those discovering Shirley’s journey for the first time.

“With its mix of comedy, warmth and honest observations about everyday life, Shirley Valentine is a play that is sure to leave local audiences smiling – and perhaps thinking about their own dreams, too.”

The production is directed by Jacky Page and follows the success of similar plays previously staged by the group, including Talking Heads.

Tickets cost £15. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit https://theath.co.uk/events/shirley-valentine/
