Residents at a care home in Warminster marked the anniversary of VE Day recently with a special visit from five vintage military vehicles.
The vehicles were brought to Ashwood Care Centre by the Bruton Expeditionary Force (BEF), a group dedicated to preserving and sharing military history.
The event prompted several residents to reflect on their own wartime experiences. Resident Barbara, who served in the Women’s Royal Naval Service (Wrens), recalled joining the service at the age of 17 after claiming she was 18. She described hearing bombers flying overhead at night and the constant fear of air raids.
The Wrens supported the Royal Navy during the war, with members taking on roles in communications, radar operation, and intelligence work, including contributing to codebreaking efforts.
Another resident, Ellen, aged 101, shared memories of sleeping in air raid shelters in London during bombing raids.
