Residents are being encouraged to volunteer and help strengthen both the community and local economy.
David Reeves, of the Health and Wellbeing Forum—a volunteer-led community support group—has urged people to find a cause they care about and get involved.
Having previously organised volunteer fairs to connect people with local charities and organisations, David is keen to see more residents step forward. In Warminster, where 42% of people over 65 were deemed at risk of social isolation in 2023, he hopes collective action can help combat loneliness.
David said, “You make a living by what you get; you make a life by what you give.”
“This quote gets to the heart of why people volunteer. Volunteering is a key contributor to the economy, as well as to our own and others’ physical and mental wellbeing. It fosters a sense of connection, helps people make new friends and colleagues, and offers a unique opportunity to develop skills or try something completely new.
“If you already have an organisation or group in mind, start by looking at their aims and values. Speak to current volunteers and organisers to learn more. If you’re unsure where to begin, the Civic Centre on Sambourne Road has a notice board packed with volunteering opportunities.
“Another great resource is the Wiltshire Together website, where you can sign up and track your volunteering activity. Both of these are also valuable tools for groups and organisations seeking volunteers. Lastly, ask around—you might be surprised by what’s available. Volunteers are often modest, but their contributions make a massive difference to our community.”
