Knitted teddies donated to Warminster firefighters are helping to comfort children involved in traumatic incidents.
Residents at Crescent Place retirement living complex, opposite the fire station, have made 37 teddies for the crew to give to children at incidents.
Crew manager Pete Holcombe said firefighters gave a teddy to a three-year-old girl who had suffered significant facial injuries in a road traffic collision a few weeks ago.
He said, “It is just something small and comforting for the child to help them in a difficult moment in their lives.”
Pete said the teddies could offer reassurance to children during frightening experiences.
“By the very nature of the age of the people that are going to receive these, they tend to be very young,” he said. “The moment they’re going to get one of these teddies, they’re going to be obviously at some of the lowest moments of their lives. I think it’s just that small comforting thing for the child just to help them for a difficult moment.”
The fire crew will keep some of the teddies on its fire engine, ready to give to children at incidents. Others will go to the local ambulance crew and a group supporting victims of domestic abuse and their families.
The teddies are the latest project by the Crescent Place “knit and knatter” group, which has around 12 residents who meet weekly to work on community projects.
Previous projects have included making nearly 2,000 poppies for a display at Crescent Place, as well as baby blankets and hats for local hospitals and alphabet and number blocks for a nursery.
