Warminster School is to sell its prep school site on Vicarage Street as part of a move to ‘generate essential income.’
The prep school will move to the senior school site on Church Street from September 2026, with the Vicarage Street site to be sold as part of the school’s long-term strategy.
A spokesperson for Warminster School said the decision had been taken during a challenging period for the independent education sector.
“This decision comes during a particularly challenging period for the independent education sector. With more than 100 schools closing in the past 12 months and thousands of pupils moving into the state sector, the need for robust long-term planning has never been more pressing.
“The move will generate essential income through the eventual sale of the current prep site and provide ongoing operational efficiencies that will greatly strengthen the school’s position in the years ahead.”
Under the plans, the prep school will be based in the building currently known as Weymouth House, while the nursery will relocate to the existing Health and Wellbeing Hub.
The school said relocating the prep school would also bring educational benefits, giving younger pupils access to specialist facilities including science laboratories, performance spaces, sports amenities, and co-curricular resources.
Headmaster Matt Williams said, “This move allows us to fully realise the spirit of one school. Our children will grow up with a stronger sense of belonging, stability, and shared identity, and their transition from Prep to Senior will feel even more natural and enriching. Above all, this is about creating the best possible environment for our pupils to thrive now and for generations to come.”
