A member of the Warminster Toad Patrol has received an award from a national wildlife conservation charity for her dedication to championing local amphibians.
Harriet James received a Newt Year’s Honours Award from Froglife, a charity focused on the conservation of the UK’s reptile and amphibian species and their habitats.
Until recently, Harriet was the manager of the Warminster Toad Patrol. During her time in the role, she was the driving force behind securing a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) for a road closure on Smallbrook Road to protect migrating toads.
“I am toadally thrilled with the Newt Year’s Honours from Froglife,” said Harriet.
“The Warminster Toad Patrol volunteers will leap into action again this spring. Make amphibians great again!”
Following two years of campaigning, the closure was secured last year, with Smallbrook Road closed between 5pm and 5am from February to April to protect migrating toads on their route to breeding grounds.
The road closure is back this year and is currently in effect between 5pm and 5am until April. Volunteers from the Warminster Toad Patrol are already helping toads return safely to their ancestral ponds.
