  • Still time to try free yoga in the park There is still time to join free yoga sessions in the Lake Pleasure Grounds before the season ends in September. Park Yoga sessions currently take place every Sunday morning from 9.30am until 10.30am. The sessions will run until Sunday 13th September. “Our mission is to improve physical and mental wellbeing by introducing the transformative benefits of yoga in nature, fostering joy, connection and a deep sense of community,” said a spokesperson from Park Yoga, the national charity which runs the sessions. “Our sessions are inclusive, designed to be suitable for all abilities no matter your age or experience.” Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.
  • Bubbles and ice cream fill park at family festival Thousands of people flocked to the Lake Pleasure Grounds for family-friendly fun at the annual Ice Cream and Bubbles Festival. The event on Saturday 1st August brought families together for a variety of activities, including a bubble show, face painting, pottery painting, and a bubble disco finale. A selection of ice cream was also on offer throughout the afternoon. “One of the real highlights of the Ice Cream and Bubbles Festival was seeing so many smiling faces enjoying everything the event had to offer,” said Mayor Jack Jones. “Whether it was children chasing bubbles, families spending time together or people simply relaxing with an ice cream, there was a fantastic atmosphere throughout the day. “Events like this are incredibly important because they bring our community together, encourage people to spend time in our town and support our fantastic local businesses.   • Warminster Town searching for first league points after opening two games Saturday 1st August: Nailsea United 3-2 Warminster Town Saturday 8th August: Warminster Town 0-1 Mendip Broadwalk Warminster Town are still searching for their first Western League points of the season after defeats in their opening two league fixtures. Town began their campaign away at newly promoted Nailsea United, but a sluggish opening ultimately proved costly as the hosts claimed a 3-2 victory. Nailsea started with plenty of energy and intensity, and Warminster struggled to match the hosts in the early stages. Town found themselves 3-0 down before Ben Snell gave the visitors a lifeline, pulling one back before half-time to make it 3-1 at the break. A much-improved second-half display saw Town fight their way back into the contest, with Snell once again finding the net, this time with an excellent strike from long range to make it 3-2.   • Warminster Museum Column This photograph of the junction of George Street and Silver Street with Sambourne Road was taken in about 1906. It is so very much of its time, and it is full of interest. When a photographer had set up his camera and was about to take a photograph, anybody nearby would be keen to feature in the picture. The man with the pail and ladle was a milkman. A level ladle of milk would be, perhaps, a pint of milk and the customer provided their own containers. The open fronted shop of Mr Brown, the fish monger, was typical of fresh-fish shops in England until the outbreak of war in 1939. The young lad standing behind the cart, seems to be holding a knife, so he could be an employee of Mr Brown. You left school at 12 in those days. The man standing in the doorway of the White Hart, was (probably) the porter and general assistant. He was from Ireland and he was resident at the White Hart. The hotel was run by a widow, Maria Adams and the census return says that she was born “at sea”. The family was probably on their way to Rhodesia, because that is where the census states that her son was born. Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.
  • Safety warning issued over viewing solar eclipse Wiltshire will fall into early darkness next week, during the biggest solar eclipse since 1999. The Moon will pass directly between Earth and the Sun, obscuring 90 per cent of the sun from the county.   • Local conservationists reach BBC Make a Difference Awards finals The Warminster Toad Patrol and a teenage conservationist have been named finalists in the BBC Wiltshire Make a Difference Awards. Dexter Painter-Coates, a 14-year-old Warminster Journal deliverer, has been shortlisted in the Young Hero category for his work promoting nature conservation and raising awareness of local wildlife. He said, “I was really surprised and I couldn’t believe that I had been chosen as a finalist. I was so excited to get the news as it would be another opportunity to potentially inspire more people to get out into nature.” Dexter regularly posts educational videos online to encourage local people to take an interest in nature and conservation.   • Ice Cream and Bubbles Festival to return this weekend The popular Ice Cream and Bubbles Festival will return to the Lake Pleasure Grounds this weekend for a day of family-friendly fun. The free event will take place on Saturday 1st August from 12pm to 5pm. There will be a free bubble disco and a bubbleologist. Ice cream will be available to purchase throughout the event. There will also be food stalls, pottery painting, face painting and henna tattoos, as well as milkshakes, doughnuts and desserts on sale throughout the event. The Pavilion Parlour will also be open, serving refreshments in the park. “We’re really excited for another Ice Cream and Bubbles Festival after huge success in previous years,” said a spokesperson for Warminster Town Council, which is organising the event. “It is another free-to-enter event for all the family.   • Community rallies to rescue swans in danger A family of swans has been rescued from a drained lake in Warminster after residents, volunteers and the town’s Mayor came together to save them from a life-threatening situation. Volunteers from Bath Swan Rescue were alerted to the situation when residents noticed that one of the cygnets from a family of swans at the Portway lake was missing. A pair of swans nest at the lake every year, and local people have taken it upon themselves to regularly monitor their wellbeing. The swan family were found in a drained balancing lake, which volunteers were told could not be refilled as it is used for flood water overflow.
