Warminster woman’s Three Peaks Challenge for baby loss charity

Warminster woman’s Three Peaks Challenge for baby loss charity

A Warminster woman will take on a gruelling mountain challenge next month to raise as much money as possible for the baby loss charity, Sands.

Lily Cambridge-King will climb the three highest peaks in the UK – Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) – within 24 hours.

The challenge will raise funds for Sands, which supports anyone affected by the death of a baby.

It is a cause close to Lily’s heart.

She said, “I’m currently going through the IVF process with my wife and, after three failed transfers – including two early miscarriages – we are taking a break.

“In this break, I wanted to find purpose, so I decided to take on the Three Peaks in 24 hours challenge.

“My mum lost a baby, who was stillborn at full term, and the charity Sands speaks volumes to me. I still think of the baby my mum lost as a brother.”

Training with dogs

Lily, who works in the emergency services, has been training across Wiltshire with her wife Ceri and their three dogs – Socks, Nelly and Jasper.

She will take on the challenge in August with her close friend Charlie, who she describes as “not afraid of a challenge”. They will climb 1,085m on Snowdon, 978m on Scafell Pike and 1,345m on Ben Nevis.

Lily and Charlie plan to snatch a few hours of sleep while travelling between each mountain, with their bags packed full of energy bars, nuts and spare socks.

Helping people in crisis

So far, Lily has raised £1,068 and hopes to reach her target of £1,800. The funds could help support Sands’ bereavement helpline, training for NHS staff, and the charity’s campaigning work to reduce the number of baby deaths.

Lily added, “Sands is a really important yet underfunded charity. It helps people in crisis when they need support more than ever.

“A lot of people I talk to don’t know much about Sands, so it’s been good to raise awareness. The more you talk about baby loss, the more you realise how many people have been impacted in some way.

“To anyone who donates to my fundraiser, I just want to say a huge thank you for your support and belief.”

Every day in the UK, 13 babies die shortly before, during or soon after birth. Evidence suggests that at least one in six pregnancies ends in miscarriage.

Sands’ Head of Bereavement Support Services, Rowena Pailing, said, “We are so grateful to Lily for her amazing efforts in support of Sands.

“Her fundraising will help us in our work to ensure that anyone affected by pregnancy and baby loss gets the support they need, and to push for better medical care and understanding so that other families don’t have to go through what Lily and Ceri have experienced. We wish her the very best for the Three Peaks Challenge.”

Sands’ confidential helpline – 0808 164 3332 – provides a safe space for anyone affected by pregnancy or baby loss. Support is also available by email at helpline@sands.org.uk

  • Openreach taken to court by council over roadworks

By Local Democracy Reporter Peter Davison

Wiltshire Council is to take telecommunications giant Openreach to court over roadworks carried out in Warminster without a permit.

The council is angry that the broadband infrastructure firm did not seek permits for work it carried out in Weymouth Street in September and October 2024.

It says the road was closed in both directions while work was carried out.

The authority also claims the firm carried out work on the A350 at Semley, near Shaftesbury, and on the A30 at Barford St Martin, near Wilton, without a permit.

The event is organised by Sustainable Warminster and Warminster Town Council

Councillor Jack Jones, Warminster Town Council’s litter pick champion, said, “Warminster residents and the Town Council grounds team work hard all year to pick up litter.

“The Great British Spring Clean is a chance to reconnect with neighbours, local groups and the wider community while doing something practical and positive."

  • Neighbourhood Plan seeks to protect green spaces and heritage assets

Local residents are being asked for their views on Warminster’s green spaces and historic assets as part of the updated Warminster Neighbourhood Plan.

The plan sets out strategies to safeguard local green spaces, protect non-designated heritage assets and preserve key views.

Warminster Town Council is seeking feedback on 15 green spaces, including Folly Lane Rehobath, Tynings Allotments, Fore Street Recreation Ground, Warminster Common, Portway Field, Sambourne Field, Grovelands, Ashley Coombe green space, Copheap, the land around St Denys’ Church, Damask Way, Bradley Road Community Garden and Warminster Community Orchard.

The council is encouraging people to provide feedback on these locations if they believe them to have beauty, historic significance, recreational value, tranquillity or richness of wildlife.

Residents are being asked for feedback on these proposals. The consultation runs until Monday 23rd March.

  • High Street development sparks debate

Plans to redevelop a prominent High Street site next to St Lawrence Chapel have sparked debate in Warminster, with some residents calling for the land to remain as a green space, while others support proposals for a new shop and ten flats.

The plans were discussed at a recent Warminster Town Council Planning Advisory Committee meeting, where councillors raised no objections.

The discussion came amid calls from some local people for the site to be left as a green community space.

In a letter to the Warminster Journal, Maggy Daniell said, “The Georgian building next to St Lawrence Chapel was allowed to become derelict and then stood as an eyesore with scaffolding around it until everyone was glad it was demolished.

“I am in agreement with the many comments I’ve heard since, that it looks much better open and would be nice as a green space.

“The setting of the Chapel is also much enhanced. It would be a shame if we lost this new improved view of one of Warminster’s loveliest assets.”

  • Knife carrying incident in Warminster raises concern

Concerns have been raised after young people were caught carrying knives in Warminster just days before a 16-year-old was fatally stabbed in Chippenham.

Inspector Lou Oakley gave an update at the Warminster Area Board meeting on Thursday 12th February. She said young people in Warminster had been caught carrying knives three days before Shayne Hambakachere was fatally stabbed in Chippenham on 31st January. The incidents are not linked.

“So, for Warminster, knife crime and knife crime incidents are non-existent or very, very low. Until about two weeks ago, we had a group of youths carrying knives, and then three days later there was the murder in Chippenham,” said Inspector Oakley."

  • Lions Clubs come together for Warminster charity

Six local Lions Clubs came together to raise £1,650 to fund essential equipment for a Warminster charity.

The clubs from the local zone of Lions International – Bradford on Avon, Salisbury, Trowbridge, Warminster, Westbury, and Gillingham, Mere and Shaftesbury – joined forces to fund a 10-litre compact oxygen concentrator for the Wessex MS Therapy Centre.

This followed a visit by clubs in the zone to the centre in 2024, where members gained an insight into the vital work carried out there.

“Our members were shown the huge range of physiotherapy equipment used and listened to how oxygen therapy helps so many different conditions,” said Paula Thorpe, zone chairperson and member of Westbury Lions Club. “We also heard how far clients must come to use this centre of excellence.”

“She served with courage and distinction as a medic and sought always to help others.

“I send my heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.”
