Warminster Town FC appeals for volunteers to support the club

A call-out has been made for volunteers to get involved at Warminster Town FC.

The club’s committee hopes new members can “help us grow and keep things running smoothly.”

No experience is necessary, and volunteers can give as much time as they’re able. Roles include bar work, cleaning, general maintenance, match day assistance and helping with fundraising.

John Tullett, a committee member at the club, said, “There is a lot volunteers can do. You can help out on match day, with catering, look after the bar or do a bit of work at the stadium.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s an hour a day or an hour a week — we appreciate any and all help. There’s no age limit; it could also be great for a teenager looking for a bit of work experience.

“It’s a really good crowd and it would be great to get more people joining us for next season.”

John, originally from Brighton, previously played semi-professionally for Lewes and also managed and coached teams. The 73-year-old moved to Warminster after taking early retirement due to health issues. He has been attending Warminster Town matches for the past 10 years and now volunteers on match days and as a committee member.

He added, “It’s a really good team and a really good crowd at games — a real family-friendly atmosphere. We’re excited for what’s to come next and would love to have more volunteers on board. It’s a friendly bunch and you get a lot out of volunteering.”

If you’re interested in helping out, email: socialmedia@warminstertownfc.com

AGM

An AGM will also be held at Warminster Football Club on Weymouth Street on Thursday 29th May at 7.30pm to discuss the club’s future.

For more information, email: wtfc.secretary1878@gmail.com. Roles available include chairperson, secretary and committee members.

  • Warminster Journal joins MPs in Parliament to discuss future of local news

The future of local news was discussed in Parliament this month as the Warminster Journal attended a national briefing on the growing crisis facing the sector.

The event was hosted by the Public Interest News Foundation in partnership with the Media All-Party Parliamentary Group and brought together MPs from across the political spectrum, including Warminster MP Andrew Murrison, to hear about the urgent need to support trusted local news.

The briefing heard that increasing areas of the UK are being designated as ‘news deserts’, where no reliable local news provision is available.

Joe McCann from the Warminster Journal said, “Across the country many local newspapers have closed, leaving communities without a trusted source of local news.

“In Wiltshire we are fortunate to still have independent, locally owned newspapers serving their communities, including the Warminster Journal, White Horse News and Melksham News, all part of family-owned Wiltshire Publications."

  • Mayor’s tea dance raises hundreds for local charities

A tea dance organised by Warminster’s mayor has raised over £800 for two local charities.

The sold-out event saw 80 people fill the Civic Centre. It was hosted by Mayor Andrew Cooper to raise money for his chosen charities for the year, Open Door Warminster and Wiltshire Mind.

Guests enjoyed an afternoon of dancing, socialising and refreshments, with live music provided by David Huxford.

“I think the level of support was just fantastic,” said Cllr Cooper. “The positivity and joy that was brought into the room by people that came was a highlight.”

“People had a fantastic time; there was lots of joy and fun and happiness in the room and people really, really enjoyed themselves.

  • Warminster man sleeps out to support homeless veterans

A Warminster veteran camped out for a night at the town’s war memorial to raise funds and awareness for veterans experiencing homelessness.

Darren ‘Daz’ Armstrong took part in The Great Tommy Sleep Out on Friday 6th March, raising almost £1,300 for the Royal British Veterans Enterprise (RBVE), a charity helping veterans in need.

“It was a cold one but worth it for my fellow men and women who are on the streets,” said Daz, who served in the army for 27 years, including 23 years full-time with the Royal Yorkshire Regiment.

“Just £15 will get them in for the night, get them a shower, some hot food, and advice on how to move forward with their lives.”

  • Last chance to have your say on the Warminster Neighbourhood Plan

Time is running out for residents to voice how their town develops over the next 15 years by giving their input on the draft Warminster Neighbourhood Plan 2.

The consultation remains open until midnight on Monday 23rd March as the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group looks to collect feedback from the whole of the town.

Warminster Mayor, Cllr Andrew Cooper, is calling on all members of the community to act now and add their voice to this public consultation.

He said, “Everyone in Warminster can say exactly what they think – what they like, what they don’t like, what they think should remain in the Plan, what should be added in and what they feel should be removed.

“The Neighbourhood Plan is a working document, a draft which will improve through each and every contribution from all members of the community.

“Please, I urge all the people of Warminster to study and consider this vital document and add their own thoughts and feeling. Residents do not need to comment on everything, just the issues that concern them. Everybody can express their views. The Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group want the best for Warminster.”

  • Local students build nest boxes for town park

Students from Kingdown School have worked with members of the town council’s grounds team to build nest boxes for use in the community.

The pupils helped to build six bird boxes to be installed in the Lake Pleasure Grounds.

“It was great to once again work with students from Kingdown School,” said a spokesperson from the council. “We enjoy sharing our passion for maintaining and improving Warminster as well as teaching and learning from the local students.”

Previously, students have worked alongside the council on various projects in the town centre, Grovelands, the Warminster Community Orchard and other public spaces in the town.

Sarah Miller from Kingdown School said, “Kingdown School is delighted to continue to work closely with the town parks service."

  • Second World Championships call-up for local agility pair

A local woman and her dog have been selected to represent Great Britain at the World Agility Championships for the second year in a row.

Claire Barton, and her cocker spaniel, Woody, will compete with Team GB at the championships in Spain this April. Claire, who lives in Westbury, has worked as a mobile hairdresser in Warminster for many years.

The pair successfully qualified following a series of competitions and a try-out day, where were tested on different skills, as well as their speed and consistency.

The pair also represented Great Britain at last year’s championships in Switzerland.

“It’s definitely a very proud moment when you have been picked to compete internationally,” said Claire, who described it as an “incredible opportunity.”

  • Warminster Museum Column: What’s in a street name?

There must be head scratching and debate when it comes to naming new roads and streets, but we will look at streets that were named a long time ago.

Many of these almost named themselves, Market Place, Station Road and Church Street are examples. East Street and West Street, although very obvious, are modified versions of older names.

East Street was East End, but it was the same street as the one we know today. West Street was West End, but it ran from the Obelisk to a point in Victoria Road, just beyond the Co-op stores. At this point, the road enters Bugley. It may not have had a name in Bugley, but sometimes it was known as the Frome Road and sometimes merely as the Turnpike.

There are other roads which had obvious names – that is, they were obvious when they first had names, but the obvious feature no longer exists. Chapel Street in the common had a Methodist chapel. The chapel closed, but the building was taken over by the Salvation Army. Many people will remember the Army, but now, even the building has disappeared.

  • Short story competitions launch in Warminster

Two competitions have been launched encouraging adults and young people in Warminster to write short stories.

The competitions are organised by the Warminster Book Festival, which will return in 2027. There are two categories: young adults, for those aged 11 to 18, and adults, for those over 18.

Young adults are invited to write stories of up to 500 words with the title “Mirror.” Book token prizes will be awarded to the top three entries.

“This corresponds to the annual BBC format and gives students who enter the national competition a chance to submit the same or a modified entry to the Warminster Book Festival competition,” said Mark Thorpe from the festival.

To enter, email a PDF copy of your story to warminsterbookfestival@gmail.com by Friday 1st May.

Winners from both competitions will be announced at the Warminster Independent Market on Sunday 28th June.
