Campaigners hoping to establish a community green space on Warminster High Street are exploring the possibility of a new compromise with the site’s owner.
The Warminster Community Green Association has been fundraising to purchase the site at 3 High Street and turn it into a community green space.
Plans submitted to Wiltshire Council in 2024 proposed a new shop and 10 flats at the site.
However, members of the campaign will now discuss a new proposal from the owner which would still deliver on the building of some new flats and a shop, whilst retaining most of the area for a public green space and wild garden.
“We are in talks with the owner about a much smaller development, retaining most of the current space,” said campaigner Maggy Daniell. “This is their proposal, which would suit us quite well as it provides amenities.”
Members will discuss the new proposal at a meeting in September.
This comes after campaigners have worked hard to boost their visibility in the town, with the recent erection of a large banner aiming to draw attention to the potential site.
Rach Hornsey from gift and homeware store Pixie and Pickle spent over 200 hours designing the banner which features cartoons of recognisable local people, including the town’s mayor, local business owners, and members of local environmental group Sustainable Warminster.
“Young children absolutely love it,” said Maggy.
The campaign is hoping to raise the necessary funds in a variety of ways. So far, schools have raised money by wearing green for a day, campaigners have sold plants and crafts, and recently, the Warminster Ladies Friendship Group donated £200.
Individuals can also donate to the campaign. Protected donations can be provided by people who join as campaign members for £5. One off, non-refundable donations can be given through the campaign’s Just Giving page. People can also purchase a virtual square foot in the community green or wild garden from £10 on the campaign’s website.
