A column by Sustainable Warminster
Emma Gillespie, sustainable fashion entrepreneur and Sustainable Warminster member, has shared her top five tips for building a more sustainable wardrobe.
If the below advice is up your street, come along to Sustainable Style at the Wellbeing Hub at 36 High Street on Saturday 14th June between 10.30am and 2pm.
There will be a clothes swap and sale, vintage fashion, and the chance to learn about fabrics and mending. Free entry but donations are welcome.
1. Challenge yourself
Tiffanie Darke’s ‘Rule of 5’ is a great place to start – challenging you to only buy five new pieces of clothing over a year. It changes your way of thinking and now I can’t imagine wanting to buy more than this.
2. It’s all about mentality
Marketing and algorithms are incredibly clever and hard to resist – but once you take back that power for yourself and decide that you don’t want to buy lots of clothes, you’ll find yourself easily scrolling past all those fashion ads.
3. Unsubscribe
Remove yourself from the mailing lists of any fashion brands that don’t align with your values. It’s fine to keep an eye out for sales but make it something worth buying from an ethical and sustainable brand, avoid those impulsive purchases.
4. Surround yourself with inspiration
Instead of following influencers who post their fast fashion hauls, follow people who are doing what you aspire to do.
5. Love your clothes!
Treat your clothes like the valuable resources that they are. Invest in a clothing shaver to remove pilling, and if you’ve always fancied learning to mend watch some YouTube tutorials and don’t worry about your mends being perfect!
