The Wiltshire Wildlife Trust has launched a fundraising campaign to protect and improve the Smallbrook Meadows Nature Reserve in Warminster.
The charity hopes to raise vital funds through its ‘Love Your Local Nature Reserve’ appeal, which will go directly towards conservation work at the nature reserve, which adjoins the Warminster Lake Pleasure Grounds near the town centre.
The campaign highlights the critical role that local nature reserves play in protecting wildlife and helping communities connect with nature.
“Smallbrook Meadows is home to rare and threatened species that depend on the active conservation management from the Trust,” said Becki Mckinlay, Director of Engagement and Fundraising of Wiltshire Wildlife Trust. “It is bordered by the Rivers Wylye and Were – two of the UK’s rare chalk streams – and is a precious wetland habitat.
“Recent restoration work on the River Were has created thriving habitats for iconic species such as kingfishers and water voles. Careful management of the fen vegetation has also benefited several priority species, including rare moths and dragonflies, while significant bat populations, including Daubenton’s, noctule, and lesser horseshoe bats, use the site for feeding and roosting.

“Despite these conservation successes, the reserve faces mounting pressures. The impacts of climate change, pollution, and local development pose a constant threat to this irreplaceable habitat. Without continued active management and community support, the future of the wildlife that lives here remains uncertain.
“Watching rare dragonflies dance along the riverbank at Smallbrook Meadows reminds us that our reserves are so much more than just land. For wildlife, they are critical life-support systems. For our communities, they are places of peace, discovery, and shared heritage.
“Through our Love Your Local Nature Reserve campaign, we want to celebrate these incredible natural assets. Our greatest hope is that it will inspire more people to feel a real sense of pride and stewardship for the wild spaces on their doorstep, ensuring they thrive for many generations to come.”
