Five wins out of five for WCC

Warminster Cricket Club 1st XI recorded back-to-back wins to remain top of the Wiltshire County Cricket League Division 1.

They delivered a commanding win over Malmesbury 1st XI on Saturday 24th May and followed it up by beating Devizes by 107 runs to make it five wins out of five for the season.

Against Malmesbury, Warminster began their innings scoring at a steady rate. George Cansdale top scored with a fluent 92 runs and was unlucky not to record his first century for the club.  Ably supported by the middle order, including Nathan Bond (52 runs), George helped the team to 250 runs for six wickets off their 45 overs.

In reply, Malmesbury were unable to score at the required run rate, lost wickets regularly and were finally all out for 140 runs.  Alex Adlam returned the best bowling figures, with four wickets for 34 runs, as the team ran out winners by 110 runs.

The Warminster 2nd XI succumbed to a heavy defeat against the Swindon Super Strikers.  The Super Strikers’ pair of opening bowlers produced a superb spell of bowling which caused the Warminster team enormous problems, with Warminster finally all out for 78 runs.  Even though Cieran Woodhouse took three early wickets for Warminster, Swindon Super Strikers reached their target comfortably, winning the match by seven wickets.

The 3rd XI recorded a comfortable victory over Norton St Philip.  Callum Widdows starred during the Warminster innings, helping to guide the team to a total of 216 runs. He was incredibly unlucky not to reach his century, falling agonisingly short on 98 not out.  In response, Norton St Philip were all out for 174 runs in the 38th over.  Mark Evans took three wickets with the rest shared amongst the remaining bowlers.

On Saturday 31st May, Warminster 1st XI made it five wins out of five for the season in beating Devizes 1st XI by 107 runs.  Warminster batted first, reaching 261 for seven wickets from their 45 overs. Rory Cullinan scored an excellent 61 runs off 40 balls, but it was Kevin Monaghan (75 runs) who provided the backbone to the innings and ensured a highly competitive total.  Whilst all the Warminster bowlers performed well, Brad Small took the honours, taking five wickets for 48 runs from his nine overs.   As a result, the 1st XI remain top of the Wiltshire County Cricket League Division 1.

The 2nd XI lost to a strong Avebury 2nd XI team.  Batting first, Avebury built a commanding score of 298 runs off their 45 overs.  The Warminster bowlers struggled to make a major breakthrough during the innings, although Oli Swinnerton took three late wickets in his five over spell.  In reply the batters found it difficult to maintain the required run rate and were ultimately all out for 146 runs.

The 3rd XI completed another resounding win. All six of Warminster’s bowlers took wickets as they bowled Melksham 2nd XI out for 116 runs in 32 overs.  Elliot Woodhouse and Mark Evans both took three wickets as Melksham struggled to post a substantial total.  In response, the top order batters helped Warminster reach their target easily, scoring the necessary 117 runs for the loss of only three wickets.

  • Openreach taken to court by council over roadworks

By Local Democracy Reporter Peter Davison

Wiltshire Council is to take telecommunications giant Openreach to court over roadworks carried out in Warminster without a permit.

The council is angry that the broadband infrastructure firm did not seek permits for work it carried out in Weymouth Street in September and October 2024.

It says the road was closed in both directions while work was carried out.

The authority also claims the firm carried out work on the A350 at Semley, near Shaftesbury, and on the A30 at Barford St Martin, near Wilton, without a permit.

  • Neighbourhood Plan seeks to protect green spaces and heritage assets

Local residents are being asked for their views on Warminster’s green spaces and historic assets as part of the updated Warminster Neighbourhood Plan.

The plan sets out strategies to safeguard local green spaces, protect non-designated heritage assets and preserve key views.

Warminster Town Council is seeking feedback on 15 green spaces, including Folly Lane Rehobath, Tynings Allotments, Fore Street Recreation Ground, Warminster Common, Portway Field, Sambourne Field, Grovelands, Ashley Coombe green space, Copheap, the land around St Denys’ Church, Damask Way, Bradley Road Community Garden and Warminster Community Orchard.

The council is encouraging people to provide feedback on these locations if they believe them to have beauty, historic significance, recreational value, tranquillity or richness of wildlife.

  • High Street development sparks debate

Plans to redevelop a prominent High Street site next to St Lawrence Chapel have sparked debate in Warminster, with some residents calling for the land to remain as a green space, while others support proposals for a new shop and ten flats.

The plans were discussed at a recent Warminster Town Council Planning Advisory Committee meeting, where councillors raised no objections.

The discussion came amid calls from some local people for the site to be left as a green community space.

In a letter to the Warminster Journal, Maggy Daniell said, “The Georgian building next to St Lawrence Chapel was allowed to become derelict and then stood as an eyesore with scaffolding around it until everyone was glad it was demolished.

“I am in agreement with the many comments I’ve heard since, that it looks much better open and would be nice as a green space.

“The setting of the Chapel is also much enhanced. It would be a shame if we lost this new improved view of one of Warminster’s loveliest assets.”

  • Knife carrying incident in Warminster raises concern

Concerns have been raised after young people were caught carrying knives in Warminster just days before a 16-year-old was fatally stabbed in Chippenham.

Inspector Lou Oakley gave an update at the Warminster Area Board meeting on Thursday 12th February. She said young people in Warminster had been caught carrying knives three days before Shayne Hambakachere was fatally stabbed in Chippenham on 31st January. The incidents are not linked.

“So, for Warminster, knife crime and knife crime incidents are non-existent or very, very low. Until about two weeks ago, we had a group of youths carrying knives, and then three days later there was the murder in Chippenham,” said Inspector Oakley."

  • Lions Clubs come together for Warminster charity

Six local Lions Clubs came together to raise £1,650 to fund essential equipment for a Warminster charity.

The clubs from the local zone of Lions International – Bradford on Avon, Salisbury, Trowbridge, Warminster, Westbury, and Gillingham, Mere and Shaftesbury – joined forces to fund a 10-litre compact oxygen concentrator for the Wessex MS Therapy Centre.

This followed a visit by clubs in the zone to the centre in 2024, where members gained an insight into the vital work carried out there.

“Our members were shown the huge range of physiotherapy equipment used and listened to how oxygen therapy helps so many different conditions,” said Paula Thorpe, zone chairperson and member of Westbury Lions Club. “We also heard how far clients must come to use this centre of excellence.”
