Warminster Neighbourhood Policing Team: The importance of neighbourhood policing

Warminster Neighbourhood Policing Team: Van thefts in Warminster

The job of a local neighbourhood policing team is busy and varied. Whether we are walking the beat, attending meetings, or completing paperwork, we are always working to keep our community safe.

In the last 12 months we have carried out 10 warrants across Warminster, Westbury, Mere and Tisbury, where we have used intelligence provided by you, the public, colleagues and partner agencies. During those warrants we have arrested nine people and seized five thousand pounds in cash and a large quantity of both cannabis and cocaine.

To carry out a warrant, we must build a file containing evidence and rationale that we can take to the magistrates’ court to get approval for us to carry out that search. These may be drug warrants, linked to organised crime groups, using vulnerable people in our community to profit from illegal behaviour. My officers spend a lot of time putting those files together to make sure we have the best chance of helping those vulnerable people.

If those vulnerable people are in social housing, we also work with the housing authority. We may be able to apply for a closure order, which means we can stop and arrest anyone from entering the property who should not be there. Again, this needs to be authorised by magistrates.

Modern policing involves more than just being a visible presence. It is about forming relationships, earning trust, and proactively working with communities to prevent crime.

Another concern has been raves taking place in our area. My officers have worked hard with the local community to address concerns and work with residents and council members to prevent more taking place.

In a study by the College of Policing, 7 out of 10 people agreed that the most important police work happens behind the scenes. We know we need your help to carry out that work. If there is something happening in your area that concerns you, tell us. You can attend a community event, call 101 or let us know through our website.

  • Warminster woman publishes first children’s book

A local resident has written her first children’s book, inspired by a story she created when she was 11.

Chloe Annabel’s book The Scarlet Shoes follows one shoe’s journey from the glamorous streets of Paris to a second-hand shop, and finally into the hands of a little girl who gives it new life.

“I actually first wrote the original version of this story when I was 11 years old,” said Chloe. “I recently found it tucked away in some of my old schoolwork, and it inspired me to bring it back to life as a story for my two daughters.”

Chloe has a three-year-old and a one-year-old and is expecting another child in the new year.

  • Wiltshire Council reverses practice on free newspapers

Free newspapers, including the Warminster Journal, can now be used to advertise certain public notices after Wiltshire Council reversed a long-standing practice that restricted such advertising to paid-for titles only.

When Wiltshire Publications took over and relaunched the Warminster Journal as a free newspaper in 2024, the council withdrew all Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) notices – key legal adverts informing residents about changes to roads, parking and speed limits – saying it would only advertise in paid-for titles.

Despite using the Warminster Journal under its previous ownership when it was a paid-for paper with a smaller circulation, the council switched TRO advertising to the Wiltshire Times, a paid-for publication based outside the town, also with a smaller circulation.

Council leader Cllr Ian Thorn said the move reflects the new Liberal Democrat administration’s commitment to stronger engagement with local communities.

  • Free parking reinstated for Blue Badge holders

Blue Badge holders can once again park free of charge in Wiltshire Council-run car parks.

Wiltshire councillors voted to reintroduce free parking at the full council meeting on Tuesday 21st October.

Charges were introduced for Blue Badge holders in council car parks in 2022, although free on-street parking remained in place.

With full council now backing the change, Blue Badge holders are once again able to park free of charge in all Wiltshire Council car parks.

  • From Warminster to Royal Ballet – and Back: star dancer returns with laugh-out-loud show

A fast-paced and light-hearted show exploring the history of ballet is coming to Frome this month.

Bluffing Your Way in Ballet takes audiences on an entertaining journey ‘beyond the tutu’, featuring stories and dances inspired by ballet legends including Václav Nijinsky, Margot Fonteyn, Rudolf Nureyev and Isadora Duncan.

The production is led by Alexandra Pickford and it’s very much a case of ‘local girl makes good’ as she grew up in Warminster before her career as a dancer with The Royal Ballet and English National Ballet.

Alexandra draws on her extensive experience to bring to life the personalities and performances that shaped her career.

  • Black hole widens in Wiltshire Council’s finances

By Local Democracy Reporter Peter Davison

The black hole in Wiltshire Council’s finances has widened.

The council has a legal duty to deliver a balanced budget, but a predicted overspend of £6.5 million has now widened to £6.6 million after three months.

In September, the council was forced to dip into reserves to try to narrow the gap.

And at a meeting of the council’s cabinet on Tuesday 11th November, senior councillors will be asked to approve a further dipping into reserves.

The predicted £6.6 million overspend represents 1.3 per cent of the council’s £527 million budget.

Nevertheless, the Liberal Democrat administration insists it is “facing up to and responding to budget challenges.”

The authority said the primary pressures continue to be within adult and children’s social care services. These are being driven by the complexity of the support required by people.

And whilst the government offered assistance to councils in the wake of the rise in Employers National Insurance, the tax has hit the private care sector hard – and that, along with inflation, is driving up the costs of statutory services the council buys in.

  • Double boost for Warminster Town FC

Warminster Town Football Club is celebrating a double boost – securing major Premier League funding for vital ground improvements and receiving recognition for its work in the community.

The club has been awarded the maximum available grant of 70% towards the cost of replacing its ageing pitch barrier through the Premier League Stadium Fund (PLSF). The upgrade will see the existing barrier – long a health and safety concern – replaced with a modern, flexible PVCu system that meets current FA and league standards.

Adding to the celebrations, the club was also Highly Commended in the Organisation of the Year category at the Radio Bath Charity & Local Business Awards 2025 – a recognition of the club’s growing role as a community hub.

Club chairman James Stone said the Premier League grant was “a fantastic achievement for everyone involved” and marks an important milestone in the club’s long-term development.

  • Trial traffic restrictions planned outside Minster School

A trial scheme to improve safety for pupils travelling to and from school will be introduced outside Minster CofE Primary School.

The School Streets scheme temporarily restricts motor vehicle access at drop-off and pick-up times during term time. It aims to make the school entrance safer, encourage walking and cycling, and cut pollution around the school.

Wiltshire Council is running the 12-month trial at six schools across the county, all of which requested to take part. At Minster School, an automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) camera is proposed to enforce the zone. Residents in the roads affected by the School Streets, plus emergency services, will receive exemptions to travel through the zone. Other exemptions can be considered on a case-by-case basis, including Blue Badge holders or school buses.

  • Poppy display raises money for Royal British Legion

A group of Warminster women have created a large poppy display to raise funds for the Royal British Legion.

The cascade features over 1,000 knitted poppies, made by the Knit and Natter group at Crescent Place retirement complex in Portway over the last few months.

“Hopefully their hard work will help raise donations for the Royal British Legion this year, and in the years to come,” said a spokesperson from Crescent Place.

The group is already working on their next project, knitting blankets for premature babies in local neonatal units.
